I can't believe the Jolly Rogers haven't been mentioned in this post yet!! 20 years at faires behind them and they're still rockin'! As far as my other favorites, the Musical Blades, Ogrot and the Beerside Scoundrels top the list. Owain Phyfe is another fave even though I've never seen him live.

Gauwyn of Bracknell

Music: Wine & Alchemy and the Dregs
Stage Acts: Pizpour the Magician

(I also agree on the Jolly Rogers and Ogrot)

I never thought I'd say this after their last 'less than stellar' performaces; but I miss the Corsairs as they performed their first few years.
Aurum peccamenes multifariam texit
Marquesa de Trives

Definitely Circa Paleo. The music is great and they invite our girls up on stage to dance. Because Jenny always remembers their names, it really makes faire extra special.
Johnny Phoenix cracks us up every time.
My 8 year old's favorite and one of ours too is the Washing Well Wenches.
As always Silent Lion.
Thom Bedlam (please come back to GLMF)
Plunder Doggs are so much fun! We miss Porter and Stout together.

Bob of the Lake

NYRF is my home faire and here are some of my favorites:

Music: The Crimson Pirates, Wolgemut, Cast in Bronze, Henry Martin, Phillip Hole (the singing gravedigger)

Performers: Dexter Tripp, Hey Nunnie Nunnie, Stewart & Arnold, Washing Well Wenches, Arsene Dupin, Vixens en Garde, Ded Bob

I came, I saw, I skipped to my lou.

I have a question, and it's not intended to insult or cause a small war...

What is it with Cast in Bronze? Admittedly, it's a fascinating concept, good entertainment, music is fine, but it's way anachronistic for a Renaissance faire. Now I realize that many of the performers use some sound reinforcement, and back in the day, very few troubadours carried a Fender Passport portable PA, and even fewer had a 120-volt socket to plug it into. But the MIDI or pre-recorded rock tracks that they use really ruin it for me. If the music was more period, and sounded more period, I think I would like it a lot.

Again...just me...but anyone else have this reaction to it?

I can remember when no one had miked sound (at faire, no, I'm not that old!)...Although it can be nice with the bigger crowds, it also bleeds a lot into other acts and I love to support those few who carry on without amplification...At least try and conceal it tastefully somehow.
I have enjoyed Cast In Bronze as a novelty, it probably would really be just as good without the MIDI and pre-recorded tracks.

I think what bothers me the most are the rock drum tracks (in the Ren Faire setting). Don't get me wrong—I'm a rock musician in my spare time. If it is MIDI tracks they are using (I say "they" because there are more than one behind the mask), it would be quite easy to replace some of the modern instrumentation with older instruments, but I don't know if they do their own tracks.

The advent of good wireless systems is making it possible to add reinforcement, and there are ways of doing it in such a way that it doesn't bleed over so much. It would take a financial commitment by the faire operators, though, and I don't see that happening. As a musician, I know how tight most club owners are about providing any kind of support for their acts, at least in my part of the country. We're lucky to get enough power to run our shows sometimes!
