So! I'm at Joannes looking for Duck to line my corset with and the lady shows me $10.00 a yard duck cloth,OUCH! Isn't that kinda high for duck cloth? Where should I go to look OR am I just being cheap? Is there different kinds of duck cloth? Weight, etc. . . .

I use canvas. I typically buy it at Hobby Lobby, where it's about $6-7/yard. I have enough that I will never need to buy it again, but I've also purchased it from Hamilton Dry Goods, where it's $3/yard.

Is that the regular cotton duck? I didn't remember it being that expensive (I thought it was something like $8/yd). Do you have coupons? That should cut the cost down 40%

Also, if you live near a Walmart that still has fabric, they usually carry cotton duck in black, white, and khaki for around $5/yd, which is good if you don't have Joanns coupons.

Thanks Gem! So do I want medium weight cotton duck?

I used to work at Joannes...

There is usually a coupon run every week or two in the sunday paper, at least here in Florida. I always found it humorous that most of the time it was the same coupon over and over but with a different expiration date...(And they do look at that...)

The walmart near me took it's fabric area out too...

Joyce, I've gotten the "medium heavy," which is listed down closer to the bottom. In fact, I've recently run out of the 4 yards of Caramel I bought several years ago, and which you can see here, being the innards of a bodice. I've found Ron (?) really helpful to work with--he knows his stock inside and out, and if you tell him what you're working on, he can advise you pretty well (well, I guess I should say that I was able to tell from his descriptions of his wares exactly what I wanted. I'm not sure I said, "I'm making a corset," and he replied, "Oh, yes, well, our best corset fabric is _________." LOL!)

Butch

I just bought a bunch of cotton duck over the weekend at JoAnn's, where it was 25% off; bringing the price down to 7.49 a yard.

I got the cream (ivory?), grey, and burgandy.  VERY heavy!

I read online and heard on the news that cotton and silk are going up in price, because of the flooding and/or drought in Pakistan and other countries that raise cotton. Ready to wear, such as jeans will be going up, too, of course.

"However, this past year there are have been massive cotton crop failures in Pakistan (due to the severe flooding), China and other cotton growing regions with the result that cotton is trading at all time historical highs. This has resulted in very large cost increases from all suppliers of yarn, fabric and clothing. All manufacturers of cotton clothing are raising prices."

The result of this is that other fabrics and threads are also going up in price as demand for cotton replacements increases.  After flooding, especially as severe as it has been in some areas, it will take years for the cotton crops to recover, especially where complete replanting must take place.

I would also like to add that cotton has been dead cheap these last 15 years. Especially considering the damage it makes to areas where it grows. Pesticides and fertilizers, which cotton needs a lot of to keep up the production, leaks into the surface water and causes more troubles than we've understood so far. Not just "far away" countries like Pakistan and India, but also in the US. I doubt increased prices will address this problem in any way, but maybe it'll make people try out alternative fibres like linen, hemp or wool instead.

Although from someone wanting to sell you organic cotton, or wanting to save the environment, these sites sums it up well:

I heard about the price of cotton going up and was wondering if anyone has tried the bamboo fabric. Or if it is even available to buy other than in already made clothing.
May the stars always shine upon you and yours.

Did a search, and found several places that sell bamboo fabric by the yard.

One of them is actually called the Bamboo Fabric Store.

I haven't bought bamboo fabric on a bolt,
but I have bought a couple of t-shirts and some underwear made of bamboo fabric and I found it to be superior to cotton both in feel and in durability.

If I could get bamboo fabric by the yard I would definitely buy that instead of cotton

Lady Joyce When I have went looking for duck cloth it has run from 8-10 a yard.  The 10 a yard was "specially treated for marien use"  What ever that means...

When in doubt for Joanns coupons I try this site http://printable-coupons.blogspot.com/2005/12/jo-ann-coupons.html
They dont' have all of them but they do have a few.  Currently they have a 20% off your total purchase coupon out there.
