Incorporating this into Roma garb??

Me again! :D Apologies if I am posting too much, but I am so excited you have no idea!! *squeel*

So... I've been looking at tankards, steins, mugs and cups to carry along at Faire for sampling various numnums.

Came across this cup on eBay:

and am bidding on it, so nobody snipe it. :D

Was trying to think of ways to secure it to my Roma("gypsy") garb and my mom suggested drilling a hole and putting a lace through...? Do you think that would be okay?

Or do you have any other ideas for securing a non-handle cup?  I was thinking a yarn-woven basket type holder, such as those used for hanging plants. Know what I'm referring to? Has diamond-shaped openings and is knotted together like a fish net...

Ideas? Opinions?

Even if this doesn't work for my garb, I have a thing for wooden cups, bowls, spoons, etc and it will just be added to my modern usage collection.

Personally I would go for one with a handle so you can attach it to a belt.  But a bag for the wooden cup would work great (and keep it clean!).  Probably wouldn't drill a hole just because I would be afraid it would crack.

I like the idea of the net bag type of thing...you could also make wither with rope or leather a rigging of sorts...with a strap going around it and a strap going under it and then where they join have a loop you could easily attach to a belt...sort of like this idea

I've got a friend who has a skull vodka bottle (now used for other stuff) that he had a leather strap harness thing custom made for and it looks pretty awesome. I'm sure you could do some cool braids with rope to make something too...depends which look youd want I guess...
Things are shaping up to be...
Pretty. Odd.

:-\ Meh, none of the ones with handles I could find really tickled my fancy. But I do love that little simple cup that nests right in my hand.

I was a bit worried about the cracking issue too. Wish I had two cups, then I could try to hand-drill a hole and if it cracked, start weaving the net pouch thing for it.  lol!

MACRAME!!! That is what I was referring to in the first post. Macrame. I looked online for "woven pot holders" "net plant hanger" and variants, finally asked my mom and she didnt even hesitate to say macrame. Learned something new. Anyways, the macrame-type pouch is what I was thinking for a cup holder.

I have an onion bottle for carrying water that I has something like this for. I would be concerned on how handy it would be though for a cup as you'd have to really remove it to get it loose. With the bottle the neck sticks out so it makes it a bit easier. Have you tried looking in stores like Goodwill and Savers? Most of my little trinkets for my garb are from there. I got a set of beautiful onyx goblet there similar to these for dirt cheap once. http://www.scienceattractions.com/images/products/case_2.jpg

Ooooo niiice on that onyx goblet! Good find! We don't have a Savers here (loved it in Las Vegas though, found a 3 pound ironwood turtle that I just about died when I saw!) but I'll be hitting both Goodwill and Salvation Army on Tuesday to see what I can get my grubby paws on. :D Might find something that I just can't live without which I can somehow add to my set.

I'm always in the aisle that has cups and plates and bowls. I have seen some pure silver sets and chalices and such, but wood is my interest so I passed them up. Of course now I am somewhat regretting that. Hindsight is 20/20. :-\

We'll see what I can find on Tuesday.  ;)

BTW, just as a completely (well, mostly) off-topic point:  a female Rom is a Romi, not a Roma. :)

There's an excellent book if you're interested in learning to speak Khalderash (one of the main Rom dialects), even just to incorporate some words / phrases:

Learn Romani: Das-duma Rromanes by Ronald Lee

I am not an employee of Scarborough Faire and to not represent them in any way.

Ooo Lys, I've been trying to find some audio clips that pronounce basic phrases. For me, it's much easier to hear than try to pronounce by reading.
Might hit the Library on Tuesday anyhow and see if they happen to have the Ronald Lee book, sounds interesting!
