Auryn!!!

Patterns of Time and Truly Victorian are my main go-to places for Victorian patterns. I have several Truly Victorian patterns already. They are well designed and the instructions are easy enough to follow.

Here's a list of pattern companies I order from that can also be found on Patterns of Time for about a dollar more per pattern ...

Fantast Fashions(Doublets and Slops)
Truly Victorian
JP Ryan(18th Century)
Rocking Horse Farms
Laughing Moon Merchantile(Victorian/Edwardian)
Reconstructing History(16&17th Century))
Lynn McMasters(Hats)
Ageless Paterns(Victorian/Edwardian) DO NOT recemmend because instructions are LOUSY****
Margo Anderson(Tudor/Elizabethan) from her website only

I adore Truly Victorian.  Past Patterns are awesome as well.

You might want to try this as well:

I have a LOT of patterns from them but you have to edit them to your size.

Auryn

thankyou so much isabella

I don't want to hijack this thread (um, but I'm going to anyway), but how do you do that? This is one of those parts of costuming that absolutely mystifies me!

redkimba

I believe that Simplicity now has several SP patterns out as well.

Auryn

no worries gem- its not hijacking if its related and we can all learn from it.
Personally the way I do it is
- I look at the overall shape and concept of the piece. It helps if there is at least one or two other size gradients on the pattern, but I take into consideration the overall width and what the intended'finished size' is and I increase or decrease the width and angle of the pieces depending on my size.

Much the same way as I alter the sizing on the Janet Arnold patterns.  I scale them up to the original size and the add or subtract where needed and where it seems sensible to get the me or customer size required.

I have a quick related question.
I am making a dark emerald green silk jacket with a sleeveless blouse underneath. I read that it was  common practice to wear sleeveless blouses if your jacket had poofy sleeves and or you didn't plan on taking the jacket off, is this correct??
Second question, Everything I am seeing online has blouses in white or off white but I have read that it was quite popular to have sometimes almost garish color combinations.
are there any colors that I should not consider suitable for a blouse??

Many of the jackets had false fronts:

http://alltheprettydresses.tumblr.com/post/6490373762/from-the-seller-this-is-another-incredible <- such as this one

http://alltheprettydresses.tumblr.com/post/6325404252/bust-34-waist-26-i-just-like-the-contrast-of or this one with a purple and green combo

These are both from the 1890's.  Are you looking for earlier?  I have a TON of extant garments up on my tumblr blog.  Just click on the tag the decade tag to take you to a specific decade.

Although the blouse was always some shade of white (and the chemise beneath that!), the bodice or false front may not be.

Auryn

Thank you so much isabella,
this outfit is for dragoncon so I am trying to make the layers easily accessible to facilitate dealing with Atlanta heat in the summer.

I adore that black and teal one.
I am thinking at this point that I might just do the jacket with a false front like you've shown me, and then to a chemise underneath- after all my character isn't high society and can be quite shall we say 'oblivious' to how a young lady should be dressed.

Any reason why you are going with the jacket look rather than a lawn gown or summer dress?  There are definitely some wonder summer Victorian styles.  It got hot in the 19th Century too!   The link above is to everything I have tagged "1890s"

Auryn

fyi i love your page.
I am going with  a jacket because i will be wearing pants.
my character is a rough and tumble woman who is basically clueless about women's fashions so she throws on something that looks pretty like what the other ladies wear, but refuses to put on a skirt because its just not practical. Its steampunk so I dont want to go the typical bustle skirt route, at least not until I figure out something different to do with it.
I hope that makes sense.

So more like these?

I have worn a pair for my steampunk outfit with a green silk bodice in the fall/winter and a white blouse in the summer.  Technically, I think the split skirt -as they were called- lean more to the Edwardian side than the Victorian side but they are late Victorian.
