My character for my faire this year is on the queen's court, but she isn't a historical character. It takes a bit of explaining, but she's basically an amalgamation of all the Disney princesses. I've got the dress all figured out (based heavily on Ariel's pink dinner-with-Prince-Eric gown!) and the ruff (more of a Snow White collar with a sheer green ruff against it), but I'm having trouble with the hat. I was told to do something purely whimsical and Disney princess-esque, but none of the Disney ladies really wear headdresses of any kind. I'm going to wear my hair curly with pearls and little flowers in it, but I still need a hat of some kind. I have a cream pillbox and a green and gold veil which will probably both get used throughout the season, but I'd like to have an alternative. Any suggestions?

I also have days when my eyes are very sensitive to the sun, so I'd like to have an option that maybe shades them a bit. Thoughts?

They all have crowns or a bow/head band.  You could make a hat that has a crown in it.  You could even incorporate a hidden mickey!  Or you could always go with the cone head style. ;)

Here is a Butterick Pattern that could be tweaked to make a nice headdress.http://butterick.mccall.com/b5441-products-10544.php?page_id=385

The one I am referring to is on the bottom row in the middle. Some tweaking here and there and it could be something original and wonderful. I have this pattern. I haven't used it yet.

Didn't Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) wear a french hood-like tiara?

It is similar, though a little plainer than the smallest hat on the bottom row.

Sorry, I should've been clearer! :) While my character is whimsical and Disney princess-esque, she's only the daughter of a knight, so wearing a tiara of any sort is out. That's why I'm having so much trouble--the Disney princesses (except Snow White) generally wear tiaras, and I'm not going to be allowed to do that.

The name escapes me but there is a hat that is... semi-victorian in origin and looks similar to a top hat, but it is smaller and much more proper for the ladies... I forget what its called but it kinda looks like this?

Or you could always just take some ribbon, and some trim material and make a flashy head band. Kinda like this:

Since it is whimsy, you might want to take a look at the headdresses worn by the daughters of former Duchess Fergie at the royal wedding.  Eugenie?  Not sure of their names or titles, but at least one of their hat confections was sold at auction for charity.  Add some bling bling and it might fit.  Definitely not your usual hat, but then again, she might have received it as a present from her fairy godmother.

How about a bunch of curls piled high (go to Sally beauty or some other beauty warehouse for clip in add ons if you need to) and stud that pile of hair with glittery birds and sparkly butterflies? Decorate your hair in a whimsical version of an Elizabethan court lady or Fop.

Belle has a simple band around her bun, I used little roses when I did my belle costume.

But a pill box hat could work, have you looked at pictures of the princesses before they were err princessed? they may have some ideas

Wreath of (fake) flowers and some silk ribbons? Typically worn by brides and young women as a sign of fertility, it could also fit a Disney maiden well. I'm thinking something like these:

VICTORIAN WREATH:

SMALL WREATH:

QUEEN VICTORIA:

But OK, it won't shade your eyes all that much. What about a good ol' straw hat? It can be decorated with flowers and silk ribbons instead of wearing that in your hair. And it's plausible for all centuries.

Those garlands are great but they will pop off really easy. There is no way that I can see that they attach to the head

This is shameless self promtion but these are the garlands that I do and they stay put no matter what (including when a patio umbrella bounces off your head. dont ask)

I'd love to do the Belle hairdo with just the band around the curly hair, but I have to have some kind of hat or headdress :(

I got approval on the flower wreath idea at rehearsal yesterday, so I bought flowers and florist wire today. Thanks for the suggestions :) We'll see how this turns out!

A bit late, but in Cinderella, the ladies at the ball scene have a TON of hats.  The basic Henin is there as well as a simple snood, someone with pearls wrapped in their hair, ect.   Rather than looking at the Princesses, check out the background animation.  I think Sleeping Beauty had some interesting ones has well.   All the Princesses prior to 1990 has at least a headband.

Belle has her bun thingie, Tiana ( Princess and the Frog) wears hats from the 30's the only one that I can think who doesnt is Rapunzle

And yes I do study the princesses  ;D ( and so far my little boy cant fight me on watching the movies lol I dont think thats gonna work for long)

Too late! I kid, I kid; I'll go back and take a look at the background characters ;)

I worked on the wreath this afternoon, and this is what I came up with:

What do you think? Does it need more? My hair will be in the Elizabethan front rolls and the veil will start where the back of the wreath is now. I know it's small, but I like it that way. One of the groups on our cast wear big flower wreaths in their hair, so going bigger might mean getting confused with them.
