I know this isn't ren
but I posted it in mundane sewing and I guess very few people go over there.
So here is the scoop

I need a little expertise help to supplement my little brain library of knowledge.

I have been dying to make the Alice in Wonderland Um dress since I saw the movie in the theatres.
The hold up has been trying to find a fabric to simulate the black and white (with hearts of course) organdy that is the top layer.

Well it seems that I might be able to get my hands on the remnants of the actual fabric that they used in the costume shop for this movie. It is retarded expensive but I might be able to trade for it.
The question I have is- how much of it do I need?
I am 5'11" and a size 10-12.
The available fabric is 27 1/2in. wide X 4 1/3 yards

would that be enough??
Alternatively, do you know of any place that might have a fabric that is 'close enough' and wouldn't break the bank.

If anyone is interested he also has the remaining fabric from the blue dress as well as about 3.5yds of the mad hatter's tartan.

I think that would probably be enough since its only used in the top layer, the dress is knee-lengthish and it doesn't even cover the whole outer of the dress...

How expensive is it? cuz this is a project I've wanted to tackle for awhile...

I have seen a few people sew ribbon (with the flowers) for the stripes and iron on the hearts...They did it to the yardage and then cut out the pieces and it turned out really well...surprisingly well!
Things are shaping up to be...
Pretty. Odd.

You will probably have just enough.   I'd also look at getting some basic matching (a balck and white striped sheer) for trims and ruffles.  The link above might be helpful as well.

You should have enough, auryn.

Looks like the bottom layer is a crispy Red Taffeta. Should look great. I still want to make the Red Queen.

Ariel
he is asking $600 for the whole thing for the Um dress.
But I have him interested in a trade of some stuff I don't use any more so we shall see.

isabella, thank you very much for that link there is some great information in there, especially about the layout of the pettycoats and red skirt.

Lady Kathleen, if you want I can ask him what else he has.
I know he has some of the fabric from the latest Pirates movie- I think the curtains from the big buffet table scene at the beginning of the movie.

I cant wait to see your dress!! This has become one of my favorite movies, I just love the costumes. Honestly, I would love to make just about every costume in it!! So far, though, all I have done is a couple Mad Hatters....the hats are a blast to make:)

Auryn

Thanks for the input.
i will let you guys know if theres any success.

Auryn,

I would be interested in the fabric for the Outer Skirt. Everything else I already have or can get with little problem.  Now my only problem is spare time!

Lady Kathleen,
if I don't end up getting the black and white striped fabric for the outerskirt I will pass his contact info to you.
I would much rather see it in your capable hands than anywhere else.
