Blankenburg Castle, locally known as Kasteel Blankenburg, lies in the town of Beuningen, in the Gelderland province in the Netherlands.

The castle of Blankenburg was already around in 1500. At that time the Van Appeltern was recorded as owner of the castle. The exact build date is not known. There is not much left now; even most of the moat has been filled in.

Skipton Castle is situated within the town of Skipton, North Yorkshire, England.

The castle has been preserved for over 900 years, built in 1090 by Robert de Romille, a Norman baron.

Iga Ueno Castle, also known as Ueno Castle and Hakuho Castle, is a Japanese castle.

Construction on Iga Ueno Castle began in 1585 by the command of Takigawa Katsutoshi. Iga Ueno is one of the few moated castles in Japan.

Castle Nijenbeek  is a ruin on the banks of the Voosterbeek in the Netherlands.

The castle was probably founded in the early 13th century by Count Gerard III of Guelders . The oldest known document in which a name of a lord is called Dirk Nijenbeek, dates from 1266.

Tonsberg Slott was a medieval fortress, located in Tonsberg, Norway.

In the 13th century, King Haakon Haakonson set up the castle, then called Tunsberghus. Only a few ruins of the fortress are now left.

Derawar Castle, or Fort, is a large square fortress in Pakistan near Bahawalpur.

The fortification was first built by Hindu Rajput, Rai Jajja Bhati of Jaisalmer in the twelfth century. The British occupiers, in the nineteenth century, maintained only the inner wall, leaving the outer wall to crumble to foundations.

Sheikhupura Castle, also known as Emperor Jehangir's Palace, is slightly northwest or Lahore in Pakistan.

Mughal Emperor Nor-u-Din Muhammad Jahangir renamed the ancient city of Virkgarh to his nickname of Sheikhu. In 1607, Sheikhupura was constructed following an order of Jahangir.

Czudec Castle is located in Strzyzow County, Subcarpathian Voivodeship, in south-eastern Poland.

In 1264 Czudec was listed as a border fortress of Przemysl and Malopolska. The exact date of its building is not known. The ruins were almost lost until being rediscovered in 1955, perfectly preserved under tons of dirt.

Czersk Castle is located in the northern part of Poland in Chojnice County, about 39 km from Warsaw.

Carlisle Castle is situated in Carlisle, in the English county of Cumbria, near the ruins of Hadrian's Wall.

William II of England ordered the construction of a Norman style motte and bailey castle in Carlisle on the site of an old Roman fort, with construction beginning in 1093. The first photos in this series were taken by Dbaldock; our thanks for his kind permission to use them.

Castelo de Pombal is located in the parish, city and county of Pombal , Leiria district , in Portugal.

The early human occupation of this fortification dating back to Roman , later occupied by Muslims is witnessed by archaeological evidence recovered at the castle on the hill. Although the precise date of construction of the castle is unknown, scholars admit thatit probably occurred along with others, at the time of the Reconquest Christian , in the twelfth century, about 1159.

Varalmas Castle sits towering above the countryside on top of a hill near the village Almasu, Romania.

In the early thirteenth century, the owner of the domain of Almasu and the extinct village of Varalmas,was a branch of the family carer Borsa, Dezso (Desiderius), son of the prince of Transylvania GYÖRKÖS. It is assumed that they built the fortress of Almas called Varalmas since it is mentioned in records of 1239 as being there with the monastery. Today it is largely in accessible.

Castello di Soncino is located in Soncino, Italy.

The moated castle of Soncino dates from the tenth century. In the fifteenth century, Francesco Sforza greatly strengthened the walls.

Rocca Viscontea is a castle in Castell Arquato, Italy.

Though the town began life as a Roman military settlement, the castle is much newer. The Magnum Registrum Piacenza sets the beginning of its construction in 1342, in complete domination of Luchino Visconti.
