Not so much odd as heartwarming...

Herbie fought to protect New England's tallest elm until it collapsed from dutch elm disease.  He was unaware that a local furniture maker had set aside some of the wood to make a coffin for the 103 year old caretaker.   Now the man and the tree he loved will be together forever...

Awwwww. Agree, very heartwarming. Nice to see nice human interest stories now and again. The world is so full of crazy stuff, it's nice to know it's not ALL crazy!

Really? Panda suits...? I can't find a link to a full story, just a photo and caption on Yahoo. The caption is:

Who says nothing interesting ever happens in Iowa?

DUI suspect had zebra in truck

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Police charged an eastern Iowa man with drunken driving after stopping him outside a Dubuque bar, where he was in a truck beside a small zebra and parrot.

Officers arrested 56-year-old Jerald Reiter on Sunday night in the parking lot of the Dog House bar. Officers gave him a field sobriety test and charged him with drunken driving.

Reiter, of Cascade, disputes the arrest, saying he was about to let a passenger begin driving.

He says the zebra and macaw parrot are pets and like riding in the truck. Sometimes the bar lets them inside, but they had to stay outside this time because the business was serving food.

People were taking photos of the animals, and Reiter says he thinks a spectator reported him to police.

Pooper scooper duel ends with attacker on the run

SEATTLE, Wash. - A woman defended herself with a "pooper scooper" for nearly a half hour while a man tried to hit her with another pooper scooper in Plymouth Pilliars Park early Thursday, according to the Seattle Police Department.

Police say the woman was with her dog at park, near Boren Avenue and Pike Street, around 2 a.m. when a man approached her complaining she was making too much noise, which he said was keeping his friend from sleeping.

He then picked up a pooper scooper and began swinging it at the woman, trying to hit her, according to police.

Police say the woman also picked up a pooper scooper to defend herself, fighting off the attacker for about 30 minutes before being able to leave the park.

Police searched the area, but were unable to find the attacker, according to the police department.

O.K. This sounds like a scene from Dawn of the Dead....

Witness says naked attacker was chewing man's face

MIAMI (AP) — A witness says a naked man chewing on the face of another naked man on a downtown highway ramp kept eating and growled at a police officer who fatally shot him to make him stop.

Larry Vega told WSVN-TV in Miami (http://bit.ly/L6kwWt) that he was riding his bicycle Saturday afternoon off the MacArthur Causeway that connects downtown Miami with Miami Beach when he saw the savage attack on the bridge's off-ramp.

"The guy was, like, tearing him to pieces with his mouth, so I told him, 'Get off!'" Vega said. "The guy just kept eating the other guy away, like, ripping his skin."

The slain man was identified by the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner's office as Rudy Eugene, 31, Miami television station WFOR (http://cbsloc.al/LZlxol) reported.

Vega flagged down a Miami police officer, who he said repeatedly ordered the attacker to get off the victim. The attacker just picked his head up and growled at the officer, Vega said.

As the attack continued, Vega said the officer shot the attacker, who continued chewing the victim's face. The officer fired again, killing the attacker.

Miami police have released few details about the attack, other than confirming that there had been a fatal officer-involved shooting. The victim's name had not been immediately determined by authorities, said Detective William Moreno. Messages left Monday for a police spokesman were not immediately returned.

The victim was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital. A spokeswoman said Monday that the hospital would not be releasing any information about him.

A surveillance video camera from The Miami Herald building nearby captured images of the men's naked legs lying side by side after the shooting.

Vega said the victim appeared gravely injured.

"It was just a blob of blood," Vega said. "You couldn't really see, it was just blood all over the place.

Ok, so first of all I just think this is a cool video of something you rarely get to see.

But at about 35 seconds, tell me that doesn't look like a frozen wooly mammoth popsicle sinking into the water...

[I have had only ONE glass of wine tonight! If I am seeing things, leave me in the happy place in my head please! LOL :))

PS I put it under the "news" thread b/c that's where I saw the link...

Cool video of the ice berg!  Where am I supposed to look to see this mammoth popsicle, though? I seem to have missed it. :(

Well, be warned that the happy place in my head is probably a scary place for others...but...if you watch the timer on the video, when you get to 35 seconds in, look at the blob of ice that's starting to sink into the ocean. The right(ish) side of it, looks like the tusks, trunk and front legs to me, which then morphed into the rest of the mammoth popsicle in my head. It's sort of like cloud watching tho, not everyone's eyes see the same thing! :)
