Doggie garb

Hey all, I want to make some quick garb for my dog--she's making her first trip to MiRF this year She's 6.6lbs and I was thinking of making her a ruff (Cliche, I know, but appropo, no?) but she's all white, so I don't want to make a white one. Is it ok to make a colored one? I don't want her to look like she's got a clown collar on either  Any other ideas? Any patterns? I can't find any I really like, and I don't want to do the "Princess cone hat" either. Thanks!

And sometimes a pirate hat (altho' I can't find a photo of that at the moment).
All this because I had the same issue you did--I wanted a festive collar for her but couldn't find the one I wanted, and didn't want to make one. But! This year I've found two different ones at Tuesday morning--a silly fluffy purple fairy princess one with sparkles and pompons, and an orange-and-black jester one with bells. Not *exactly* what I wanted, but for $2.99 I was happy. (And the wings were only $5 after Hallowe'en at JoAnn.)

I have definitely entertained the idea of doing a ruff for her, though. And I don't know if it's cliche; in 12 years at KCRF and a handful of other fairs, I've only seen ONE dog wearing a ruff. It was a darling little black Schipperke, and the ruff was as big as an e-collar. It was *awesome.*

If you want more contrast between her coat and the ruff, make it from ribbon edged in black or gold or scarlet (or use your serger). If you look at the ruffs (she has a full set--wrists, too) worn by "Helena Snakenborg," all you really see is the gold edging:



This is a great ruff primer, with lots of ideas (tho' few pictures).

...Or you could just get this.

And, of course, there are the famous dragon poodles of KCRF!

Have fun! One thing I'll note--dogs are even less enthusiastic about costume fittings than husbands.

I had thought about wings too. I've never been in a Tuesday Morning, but they just put one in near me, so I think I'll check it out.

I'm glad I'm at least *semi* original! I like the idea of edging it with ribbon--maybe gold...hmmm.

I actually was *thinking* of turning her into a "noble steed"" so the Etsy link was *perfect*  as I was trying to visualize how to do a saddle blanket! Once again you nailed it! But she just *will not* tolerate a hat, so that's out.

Those dogs are hysterical! I asked my husband to let me have her dyed pink at the groomer and he said he would leave me and take the dog with him. I contemplate it on a bad day And yes, just measuring her today was an escapade--she's so dramatic! Can't imagine where she gets it from

Last year I made my little yorkie a pirate dress (out of an old striped pillowcase). She was hysterical! And my slightly bigger dog we did a gypsy style dress.

I think a "saddle" would be simple. If you cut the material out in a "u" shape, with tabs on the side to go under the belly to meet - with velcro - and the same around the neck. I did a poncho style thing like that once.

At our recent Enchanted Ground (Faery Festival), there was a St. Bernard wearing a pink tutu, with a large flower on her ears. She was adorable!

   I used some thick gold mesh stuff I had left over from making a snood,  ($1.99 yd at Joannes).
    I followed the outline for a basic doggie coat and hemmed the edges.   I used velcro under the belly and chest. 
    Looks a bit like faux chainmaile, and is cool on the dog's back.

Jack Rocks--I was looking at dog patterns today at Joann and that same thing hit me! I'm going to use that as my base and make a little faux-back lacing bodice and skirt *with* a ruff.

   Her Scottish cape is litterally a rectangle.  I added straps to the middle-ish of it so it can wrap around her rib cage easily and then pinned it around her neck with an older brooch I don't use anymore.   It's one of her favorite outfits.

Agreed! But "normal" is a matter of perspective with people like us, don't you think?
