I've enjoyed Christophe's show and have taken a few photos of him over the years.  So far, I have never made a video at TRF, but wonder how he can forbid it there.

He doesn't have a problem with photos. My opinion on why he in particular refuses video is that "it isn't so funny the third time." He only has a certain number of "rants" and by the third or fourth time you see him, you've heard them all.

In short, it's his business model - at TRF, *someone* pays to hear him rant. As someone who has watched a dozen of his performances, I can attest that he pulls in from $300 to $400 PER ACT on a bad day. It behooves him to ensure that no one watches one of his rants for free; on YouTube, nobody pays.

QuoteOn the back of an admission ticket it says (or at least, used to say) that the bearer has no expectation of privacy and may be photographed while on the festival grounds with no compensation.

Right - photographed, not recorded on video. Also, performers don't hold tickets...

QuoteI am not aware of any restrictions on photography or videography for personal use.

No one can be sure that a picture or recording will be used exclusively "for personal use." I believe some British royalty just learned that lesson the hard way.

QuotePerhaps he is just making this statement to intimidate some folks so the amount of video recordings will be reduced.

I guarantee you that if he sees a camcorder he will call for its bearer not to record him. I'm sure one could conspire to better hide their camcorder...

QuoteYou can go to YouTube and find clips of Christophe shows from several years back, so he either does not have the right to restrict taping in the public domain, OR he chooses not to pursue litigation against those who have posted clips from his shows.

OR he only recently realized that he stood something to gain from at least trying to prevent this from happening; you did just mention that you can find clips of him from *several* years back.

I have taken a few videos of performers, most are happy to have it out there on youtube http://www.youtube.com/x0xteachx0x (there are about 100 videos there) because it gets them more publicity. I've even had performers do a tagline commercial to put at the end of their videos telling people where to see them (faires, FB, websites etc.)
I've never had a patron complain that I was distracting or anything else like that.

*bribe the performers with rum. Performers like rum*

Yup. He attempted to butt heads with me a few years back and sent me a nasty, threatening email in an attempt to have me remove my videos from Youtube. I got my lawyer involved and he not only backed down but appologized. I still de-friended the sad little man. I no longer go to his shows and will not support him in any way. Pathetic.
A chill in the air, over your shoulder, the Ice Queen's cold stare, you can only be one place. The Texas Ren Faire!
