Last month, on another board, a friend was asking for ideas for a Christmas tree topper for a tree that was too tall for her usual blown-glass spire. Somebody suggested a Santa hat--which I *love!* I have scraps left over from my tree skirt, and this would be a perfect use for them. (The velvet isn't suitable for garb--it's more flocked than woven, and the gold swirls are some kind of paint.) I'm sure I could find any number of tutorials online, but I'd like a Santa hat that's actually *wearable,* (by a human), even if it will primarily be sported by our Xmas tree.  ;)

(And this would fit *perfectly* for my need for a quick project!)

I know Lady Stitch has made a bunch of hats; does anyone have any patterns or tutorials to suggest?

I made a Santa hat for Husb without a pattern; the main thing to be aware of, I think, is that the cone part is almost completely circular.  I would start with paper or posterboard, cut out a circle and start taking pie-wedge shaped slivers out until you get the diameter hat you want.  Then use that as your pattern.

My first few attempts were much more duncecap than santa . . . don't be like me. :)

Do you have an old santa-hat lying around?  You could use one as a pattern OR just:

1. get some kraft paper,
2. make a cone (it *will* look like a dunce-cap at first) that fits your head and is the length you want,
3. tape it together so that it's nice and stable,
4. draw around your head where you want the finished edge,
5. mark the CF,
6. take it of and squish it so that you have a crease at CF and CB, then cut out along the CB crease, making a note to add SA when you cut the actual fabric
7. add seam allowance to the lower edge, then cut this out.
8. To make the turn-back bit, measure the bottom edge of the cone and make a wide rectangle to fit it that's twice the finished width +SA along the crown edge and to close the circle.
9.  Stitch this to the crown.
10. If you want to get fancy, you can use the instructions you gave on the post about the chevrons to make whatever design you want onto the paper cone pattern, add SA, and
11.  make your life as complicated or as simple as you want! ;)

Gem I'll make a note and send you the measurements for mine.  The pattern I use most often is the pattern that is for the ghost of Christmas past hat from butterick that is OOP.  Just be advised it is for a 22 inch head (The PP is a 24").  It has two side seams.  You will need to do a cone pattern if you only want one seam.  There is one that is done by McCalls that I picked up when the patterns were 99 cents. http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m5550-products-8099.php?page_id=915
It is kind of strange watching your personal history become costume.
