I was hired to be a character at the MN renaissance fair and have been told that I can be a Mage so now I'm putting together my costume but I'm having trouble figuring out what I should use
Heres what I've got so far
(http://www.medievalcollectibles.com/p-5121-elven-hooded-cloak) Brown
(http://www.medievalcollectibles.com/p-11123-elven-tunic.aspx) green and removing the sleeves
(http://www.medievalcollectibles.com/p-12745-wanderer-pants.aspx) dark green
(http://www.medievalcollectibles.com/p-7334-wanderer-boots.aspx#) brown
(http://www.medievalcollectibles.com/p-343-embossed-celtic-buckle-belt.aspx) brown with steel
(http://www.medievalcollectibles.com/p-20561-curved-celtic-dagger.aspx)
(http://www.medievalcollectibles.com/p-12930-bootleggers-glass-bottle-with-holder.aspx) perhaps 2
(http://www.medievalcollectibles.com/p-18138-three-bottle-leather-cuff.aspx) I'm iffy here
(http://www.medievalcollectibles.com/p-5475-padded-arm-bracers.aspx)
(http://www.medievalcollectibles.com/p-5190-suede-pouch-large.aspx) brown

So there's all that but the thing is i feel like I look too wanderer and not enough like a Mage so I'd really like to hear from others what I could do to look more like a Mage and without going full robe
Also I haven't been able to find a cloak with a mantle (that wasn't $200) so of anyone has any ideas of appreciate it

Looks to me like you have the essentials, now you need to think about the smaller accessories and details.  What little things would a mage carry to do magic?  Herbs, feathers, trinkets, etc....  and you need a hat!  I'm thinking something Gandalf style....
Got faerie dust?

Congratulations on being cast! That's exciting!

Wow... that is a lot of stuff. First, are you male or female? That might help.

Second, as a cast member I would be wary of putting together my entire ensemble from off-the-rack pieces. You don't want to look like you just stepped fresh off a catalogue page--and you certainly don't want to look like any patron/playtron who walks through the gates. Your ensemble should look like you and you alone, like your character has gathered together the pieces over a lifetime, not bought them all new last week. You can age/distress some of your pieces, but I'd also look at what more custom items you can pull together--from found objects you've scrounged up somewhere, to things you've made, to the more unique work of your fellow merchants/cast members at Fair.

I would start by developing your character's backstory. Where is s/he wandering from? And where is s/he going? What's happened along that journey? What different people and adventures have you encountered? There's a board here for working on characters (Create a Character) that might be helpful. Also I'd look for direction and suggestions from your casting director and costume head, as you'll need to fit in with the overall look and story they're putting together for the fair.

Specifically, you should think about your character's profession. How does magic work in this world? Is it real, as in many fantasy novels, or are you a 16th Century alchemist like John Dee? Or a charlatan? The tools to perform your work should be part of your garb. Would you need books? Equipment? Ingredients? What kind of pack/s would you need to carry everything? When you interact with fairgoers, what will you say--and what props will you use to reinforce your character's identity?

I think this sounds like an absolutely smashing character to dress and play. Good luck, and have fun!!
