"It is the fall of summer" (adopted it from the radio)  I felt it about three weekends ago, the shift in the winds, the purer air.  [deep breath]  I hope it rains from here until Opening Weekend (to lift the burn ban), and then it gets mighty cold!!

Not heard the term "tent footprint" before.  But we use a ground tarp under every tent.  Be sure the tarp is not exposed beyond the edges of the tent or you WILL have a lake under your tent.

I never camp without a tarp under the tent, folded carefully to make sure it is completely under the edges of the tent
I'm seriously considering the merits of laying out another tarp inside the tent, as well, under our carpets, for extra insulation, and to make good and sure that they stay dry, and so does our gear.  Even with the tarp underneath we've ended up with rain in the tent on occasion (the monsoons two years ago, for instance), so it would be nice to have a bit of extra insurance. 

Thanks for the feedback!!  I was looking for ways to make added padding and protection and many camping websites call these "Tent Footprints".  I will definitely be looking into getting a tarp then!

(And yes, I remember stepping into the lake that was my tent after that "monsoon." Good thing we had the inflateable mattress! Later we were huddled over the fire drying my kiddoes socks and shoes like hobboes in the park.)
