Lady Caroline

I've finished the 2yd gown, by adding sleeves and a french hood:

I made the bodice a wee bit on the small size, and I can barely breath.  Hopefully there will be a gentleman or two around, to help me if I faint ;)

And I made a quick little irish dress for my daughter...if she doesn't accompany me to Mirf on Saturday, she's definately coming with us to Ohio on Sept 13.

Thank you ladies :)  Mind you, it was 2 yds wide AND long, so maybe that makes a difference?  The red material was also between 2-3 yds, and I had to end up piecing scraps together for the sleeves.  Funny thing is, both seams ended up in the same place on each sleeve (total fluke, I wasn't paying attention).

Now I just have to figure out how to get rid of that ugly inside seam, running down the contrasting inside fabric of the sleeve.  I know for next time I can move it to the top of the arm, but you'd still see it if you folded the fabric over on your arm, right?  Is that just to be expected?  Or is there a trick to not have that seam?

Both gowns are beautiful!  I am amazed and really must try a "two yard challenge".

Lovely dresses.  You make me have hope that I can use 2yds x 2yds of fabric to create a dress, I'm also 5'11"  :)

I have a dress that has similar sleeves.  I tell you what I did. Stitch seam of outer sleeve.  Stitch seam of lining (contrasting fabric). With right sides together, stitch lining and outer sleeve together at the bottom. Trim seam allowances.  Turn lining to inside.

That will leave you with a raw edge at the top of your sleeve but your inside sleeve seem will be between the contrasting fabric and your outer fabric.

Hope that helps a bit  :)
I love historical sewing for the lack of zippers ;)

Simply wonderful, Lady Caroline! I am in love with French hoods lately.

Your daughter looks so cute!

That makes total sense, I can now picture it inside my head.  Thank you so much :) I am making matching black & gold garb for hubby and myself, and I think I am going with the same style of sleeve on that gown.

Alluna:  Thank you :)  I too, have suddenly developed a passion for these headpieces, after only making the one.

So a few years ago when I made my dress, I basically ran out of time to get the bodice done before wearing it to MDRF...I had spent all of my time on my lord's and the heirs garb leaving very little time to finish mine own.  I've never been happy with the bodice, but since it only gets worn a few times a year I've lived with it.  It doesn't fit right, its too short and too high cut, etc, etc.  The undershirt I have worn was a blouse from Ann Taylor that worked well because it has no visible buttons, but I new it was a shirt and that bothered me too.

So this year I decided to start over with the bodice since I had ample remnants, and make a partlet which turned out to be more of a shirt, but I'm happy with it.  I will "premier" the new bodice and partlet tomorrow at MDRF.  I'm so excited, version 2 of the bodice is a vast improvement over version one.

Here is a picture of the old look and I'll post photos tonight of the finished pieces and the final results after the first wear tomorrow.

And now for bodice version two.  It was much more comfortable.  I also wanted to share my Lords new garb that I made earlier in the summer, but finished the look with a hat and boots purchased on Saturday....it was an expensive trip to faire.
