Greetings Folks,

We are writing to thank everyone who participated in this year's DG Loki Challenge!  We had lots of entries this year, a wealth of judges and many attendees to the challenge, itself!  We, the DG staff, can not tell you what a great time was had and how appreciative we are for everyone's interest!

The races for the winners were tight this year and there were many tasty bottles!  Here is a list of the final results:

Traditional Loki
1st Place - OCat
2nd Place - Teach
3rd Place - Lady Witts

"Flavored" Loki  (Drinks made with a loki base, plus additional flavoring)
1st Place - Trinn
2nd Place - Teach
3rd Place - John H

"Designer" Drinks  (Drinks made with alchohols other than a loki base)
1st Place - Lady Witts
2nd Place - Colt the Scout
3rd Place - Wiccaholly

We had MANY return entrants!!  Please, even if you didn't place this year, DO NOT hesitate to continue to enter!  Maybe 2009 will be YOUR year!!!

We'd like to send out special thanks to Mike P (DG Camp Organizer Extraordinaire) for doing SO much to make the Challenge a success this year.  We couldn't have done it without you, Mike!!!

Also, special thanks go out to Renshirts, Ren Tippers & Pyrate Prynts for donating prizes to all of our wonderful winners (as well as door prizes, too!)

There will be a few changes for next year's challenge.  (Clarification of types of drinks, submission containers, etc.)  So, if you'd like to participate in 2009 and would like stay abreast of the changes/updates/rules, please join the group at <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LokiChallenge>

dunno about third place.

Once again, congratulations to my Love on dethroning me. I have been surpased by my padawan of loki... Long Live The Loki Lady!
(I am soooo taking my crown back next year though lol)

[edited to correct wording]

I was at the tent with the German guys on Saturday night of Opening Weekend enjoying the Hookah when some friendlys came by with some Loki to share.  I don't know which flavor it was or who made it, but it was really good.

Congrats to all the winners.  I need to try my hand at this...

One of these days I'll make it down to TRF to enter my loki... ;D

One question though; what's the difference between the "traditional" category and the "flavored" category?  Doesn't the majority of loki fall under "flavored"?

Traditional Loki has an Almond/Vanilla flavor base somewhat akin to a faint amaretto. Flavored Loki is anything else -  chocolate, peppermint, etc. True Loki, of either kind, must be made with Everclear (or an off brand of the same proof). Any lesser proof base relegates the mix to the Other category. Still tasty, just not Loki.

Okay, that's what I thought, but I guess I'm confused by Teach's post about Trinn's Cinnamon Loki winning under the traditional category.  Am I missing something?

DB I'm going to guess that Trinn won the flavored traditional base category. There were two flavored categories, one with the traditional base {stated above made from everclear or same proof} and the second flavor category is made from any other type of base alcohol {Designer}.

Would that be right?

The Lovely Lady Trinn did indeed win the flavored category.
That was my oops, I was reading one thing and typing another... it's fixed
DB, traditional is the almond/vanilla recipe that the original creator made. It is made with extracts, simple syrup, and everclear. And yes, there are FAR more flavored Loki's than there are originals because the original recipe (the exact ratios, not the ingredient list I typed) is still a fairly closely guarded secret. Many purists insist that anything other than that recipe isn't really loki. I disagree, but still it is an interesting discussion. It is interesting to note btw, the winner of traditional this time was taught by the guy who invented loki.
And yes, FF you have it exactly right. Designer is really a catchall category for any kind of other mixed drink you want to enter as long as it is your own recipe (premixed stuff doesn't count).

*there was rum involved in that post I am pretty sure*

I am definitely going to have to try to make it out there some time to try this Loki.  I have never heard of it before I started coming to R/F.  So now I am most curios.
May the stars always shine upon you and yours.

grats to the winners! Interesting discussion on this loki making business. Good thing I got my brewing to keep me occupied! Next year we may be branching out into ciders as well as mead and beer. I'll just have to keep visiting all the winners for the Loki fix 8^)

Okay, looks like my confusion was just Teach's errata.  I had it right in my head the whole time.    ;D

Let it be know...the judges are lodging a protest.

All the winners collected their sample bottles after the contest and didn't leave them for us to further sample. We were stuck with the losing entries.

Truthfully, I was happy to see all the interest in the contest, especially for the door prizes. Folks are encouraged to shop at the vendor who supplied the prizes, if anything, just to say thank you.
