At what time in History do you see your Pirate Character?

At the end of MRF this season I had a nice patron tell me that he thought I looked very period.  I told him that honestly I'm about as Hollywood as they come.  BUT that isn't this threads topic...

When you imagine your character what time frame in History do you envision?  Are you a Sea Dog with Drake and his Elizabethan crew?  Perhaps a Buccaneer with Henry Morgan?  Or do you endear yourself to the Gold Age of piracy?  Of course you could ply your skills with Jean in New Orleans in the early 1800's?

I'll wait a few posting to tell you when Jib would have roamed the West Indies.

Though I've done significant research into all the eras you've mentioned, I'd have to say my character fits best in the Golden Age, at approximately 1700.

Although in El Lobo del Mar, the setting is the 1650's.  He does all right for himself there, too.

Around 1660's, the time of the Irish Captain Grace O'Malley. She's my hero!  ;D

Ok, ok, ok!! Sheesh!!  ;)
So , since I'm keeping it simple for the time being, (Maelstrom being a simple tradesman from Northern England, signing on with various and sundry pirate crews in search of travel, money, trouble and women) I'm going with the "Golden Age" for now.  I reserve the right to change it as I detail him more over time!
As was pointed out to me by a man FAR wiser than myself, the simplicity of my persona allows me to "name drop" with the best of 'em.  Who knows which captains I've sailed under in my time at sea!?  :P
Yea, so this was probably a bit more than was required by the thread, but there ya go!  ::)

See?  That wasn't so bad, was it, Grasshopper?  The 'when' strongly influences the 'what' and 'where'.

I'll have to say second half of the 16th century because my "pirate garb" is basically my 16th century undies without the gown on top- shirt, drawers, corset as outerwear, petticoats, and more & flashier jewelry. The only OOP accessory is the replica flintlock pistol.  ;D

The pirate I'm trying to work up now will (hopefully) be 1575(ish). Elizabethan Seadog-era.

(Gah, posting timed out. Hope it didn't screw up...)

Make you think a little doesn't it?

And of course this isn't supposed to be 100% historically accurate.  If you want to wear a tricorn and claim that you sail with Drake go for it!  If you want to image fighting the British with a long sword in 1812 I don't care!  Just be careful should someone call you on it.

Fun is the theme!

I would say mid 1600's, after the French regained control of Tortuga from the English. Especially since I work for Tortuga Traders :-)

Well my pirate character , Captain Amy was born  in the mid 1500's  but she   found  this  special  compass that allows  her and  the rest of the crew on her ship    to time travel  between the  1500's  and  the Golden age  of piracy.  More  fun that way.  makes for  more adventures, and gives me  different ways  to portray  my character.
