I saw a reference to Ole King Cole somewhere here and it made me think of things past.  So in honor of the impending opening, tell what you remember from Scarborough which is no longer around.

I remember the Hobbit Holes that were over close to where the maze is now.  I guess they had to close them because they flooded so easily.  Still it was always cool inside, even on the hotest day.

I remember the hobbit holes. Too bad they closed. Remember all the other shops south of the Birds of Prey? You can still see the tops of some of the buildings. I think they were closed about the same time as the hobbit holes.

I remember when the mud pit for the mud show was were the chess field is.

I remember when the joust was in the Crown Meadow. Anybody got pics of Tony the Pony?

I remember the White Horse pub before it changed. It seemed friendlier for gatherings then. The new set up is a little awkward...

The Hobbit Holes were already closed when I began visiting Scarborough Faire in 1996, and the section of the faire grounds south of the Birds of Prey stage (where the Chess Field used to be) was closed off (part of it became the Village Green Corporate Picnic area, and part was used as the pre-parade staging area until the route changed) before the 1999 season.  That area had a really neat old tree with wide spread branches that the Scarborough Madrigals sang under (and in  :D ), near a small shop that was packed full of musical instruments (they didn't reopen after their area was closed :'( ).  Closing that section also removed the short-cut to the Holly Field, where I spent a lot of time visiting at the House of Dra, the Bookshop, and listening to the Gypsy Guerrilla Band (the last two aren't at Scarby any longer).

Bookshop is still there.  Right next to Fripperies and Wazelle's walking sticks-

dbaldock

Is the Bookshop still owned by the same guys who had it in the late 90's?

Joey has been there all along. He also had one at TRF in the early 90s I believe.

Found a picture I took at the Bookshop in 1998.

The owners were Joe and Gary.  One is partially in the shot on the far left, and one is on the right, playing the game.  Which one is Joe, and which one is Gary?

The House of Dra is also no longer at Scarby. Saw her at Irish Fest and she said would wouldn't be back this season (as well as last season if I recall)

LadyStitch

Do you mean lady Dra herself would not be at Scarby or that the house of Dra shop it's self would not be?  I swear I saw her shop that is a co-op with another vendor there and ready for the Faire just yesterday.
It is kind of strange watching your personal history become costume.

I thought I had heard last year that she wasn't going to be at Scarby anymore, but take a look at this page from the NEW web site:

Shoppes - Apparel & Accessories - #28 House of Dra

If her shop isn't there, someone needs to update the new web site.

VIII

I revisited the site of the Hobbit Holes last year after Faire.  It was a chilling reminder of what once was.  One roof has caved in, but the other one is still there, cool as autumn even during the July heat.  I had to shed a tear for the Faire I knew and loved lo those many years ago, gone but not forgotten
