Not sure if this is the right place for this question but.. Have any of you
that make loki ever tested the alcohol content of their loki.
I cut the amounts way down and maintained the right ratio of water
and 190 proof everclear i thought, and was kind of surprised as to
what it tested out to. I have 2 high alcohol hydrometers and they both
agreed, i even tested straight everclear and it was right at 190 proof
as advertised.

This is how much i mixed up to do the test.

250ml water
93ml everclear

I started with 1/2 gallon water and 750ml everclear so a half batch, and
did the math down to what i listed above. What number have you gotten
if any of you have tested it before.

You need to add in the sugar to get a completly accurate reading.
When I tested my butterscotch loki it ended up as 150-155 proof

yes... I am a science nerd and just had to know lol

*i would check the proof on the rum, but it never stick around long enough to find out for sure*

Actualy the sugar would throw it off, the sugar would raise the specific gravity and
make it so you could not get an accurate reading. I have been making wine and beer
and mead since 1988 and that just is not going to work. i tried it without thinking on
my last batch of loki, and the hyrometer floated roght out of my 100ml graduated
cylinder. And the alcohol dilution calculator i used confirmed what i read in my test.
I was guessing right around 150 but two different proof/tralle  hydrometers said otherwise

Well there is the old fashon way to proof it, black powder and alittle loki, may have
to give it a go.

Just wondering Teach how did you test your loki?

Always willing to learn.

I went to the chemistry department and asked the teacher to find out for me lol
She played with it and several probes hooked into the computer
(I do physical science... not much on the chem side lol)
And pronounced one batch as 75% alcohol (150 proof) and the other as 78% alcohol (156 proof)
Honestly, I don't play with the labprobe equipment she uses so I can't tell much about what she did to test it except to say she has a masters in chem and I don't lol

*she has offered to test my rum too, but I believe she just wanted to take it and run lol*

Ah, she probably did just want a taste. Well she has all the high tech proby
things which i wish i had the money for. We must just be making loki from
two different recipies, you can not be adding much water at all to a bottle
of alcohol to have it test out that high. The loki i have been making is very
good, and i just made a chocolate respberry yesterday. But no where
near the alc content of yours. Would love to know how you make yours.

Thanks, Michael

ah but then you'd be making mine and not yours lol
The ones she tested were my first batches and much much stronger than nowadays. I would make a guess of my newest recipes being around 100-125 proof because of changes

*I was trying to get the same proof as my rum... but just cant nail it down*

okay slightly off topic but what is Loki, I've searched google but couldn't find much. I love mixing drinks so a recipe would be nice if it's not a problem as well.

Aosto

ahhh, nevermind, nothing a quick forum search wouldn't reveal. Thanks.

Point taken Teach, well now that i know where mine is sitting ti
will be an easy matter to pump it up. Looks like i will need to
mail myself some bottles home when i journey south at the end
of the month.

Thanks for your input Teach.

Empty bottles good ? I think not. That's like a hug without a squeeze, no joy
in either. I'm only going for the weekend and no checked bags, and i would
probably not get any in a carry on bag with flammability warnings on the bottles.
I'll find some bubble wrap and wrap them up good, they will make it. Would
not be the first time i have mailed wine or whatever around the country.
And like you said Unilady, i have socks.

I am working on a local liquor store contact to see if he can even get it, It
can not be SOLD in Ny, but if he makes it a gift i in turn will gift him the some cash.

Oh, believe me, I understand.  Unfortunately, mailing alcohol is also highly illegal.  I understand about non-checked baggage, as back in the day I was the recipient of many a carry-on/athletic bag full of "socks".  Of course, the socks were full of bottles of wine, but I was only asked what was in the bag, not in the socks  ;)  Yes, that was back in the early 80's when you could put whatever you wanted in your luggage and stay clothed at all times.  You could even do needlework or knit on the plane!!!  Whoa, dating myself now!!!  OH well, at least Someone is  ;D
