Intersting adjective!  As a horse person, a puissant class is one where the jumps are just horrendous and the goal is to gain as many points as you can within a time limit.  The worst jumps have the highest points. The value of the obsticle are typically displayed somewhere on the jump itself.  I had to look the word up since the horse reference it the only one I know. 
–adjective Literary. powerful; mighty; potent.
Hmmm..  Makes sense!
