Buns!

So how do you put your hair up in a bun?  Sounds silly, eh?  But I've never done it. I normally kinda twist it up and use a toothed clip thingie to keep it up off of my neck (that drives me nuts!).

Do you use regular bobby pins or is there a H/A option?  Or are bobby pins H/A? Or does it not matter because the bun will be hidden, hopefully, by a coif or biggins? My hair is about four inches past my shoulders and while there's a lot of it, the hair itself is fine.  In other words - as long as it is, it makes a fairly small bun.

Or should I just pull out the #2 clippers and give myself a buzz cut?  Kidding, sorta.

I have long but extremely fine and thin hair and put it in a bun on a regular basis, it works best when it's wet.  I pull it all back and make it neat, do one long twist, then twirl it around into a bun.  I use either hair sticks or a bun holder to keep it in place.

I have really fine hair about the same length as yours, and it makes a pathetically small bun.  I've tried this technique with some success.

All you need is a sock (preferably close to your hair color), ponytail elastics, and maybe some bobby pins.  It really adds some bulk to your bun and makes it look much nicer.

Of course, if I'm just hanging around the house and don't really care how it looks, I just pull it back to the crown of my head, twist it, wrap it around, and put a scrunchie around it.  Tres sexy!

I put some hair goop in my hair and then beat it into submission with the heavy duty hair pins... I kid you not I have to use the ones that are like 3 inches long! I have thick hair!


But for the bun challenged I say just do the hair goop thing and then twist and pin, since your hair is short I donno how well it will stay but the hair goop will help it stay put.

My mom has been looking for a donut bun for years!  Now I can tell her how to make them, thank you.   Here in Canada, when I was a kid  *coughintheseventiescough* you used to be able to buy donuts, by Goodie, and other hair companies.  I guess they went out of style, because they stopped making them.

My hair is thick and goes down to just barely passing my hips now.  I use two hairsticks and that's it. 

I pull my hair back like I'm going to put it into a pony tail.  I then twist it, like a rope, until it falls in twists to the back of my head.  I then put the last of the hair under the newly formed bun.  I find two good tension points at the top of the bun.  I put the first hair stick in the outer twist with the pointy end facing up towards the sky.  Once it's through the outer twist, I then turn it and jam it through the rest of the bun, next to the back of my head.   I do, basically, the same thing with the other hairstick and the next tension point.   

So far, I've been able to wear my hair up like this to Ballet, work, camping, ect without a problem.   

The H/A way to do it is most likely using ribbons to hold the hair in place although I've seen pictures that clearly don't use ribbon.

My aunt gave me some kind of a hair device, that is basically like a peice of bendy wire, with foamy stuff around it, the idea is you put it at the bottom of your ponytail-d  hair and roll it up (similar to using rats, for thsoe that know what that is) or if you were rolling up a dead body in a carpet for those that dont... and then you bend the wire to keep the shape. you may need to employ bobby pins or other hair restraint devices.

`Even if they don't make them, you probably could make one yourself... either use the donut sock, or you could take a peice or peices of wire about 6 inches long, and wrap them in fabric close to your hair color or make a little tube and put the wire inside and stuff it with batting of some sort...

My hair is a few inches past my shoulders, and it was not until this summer that I could manage to make hair sticks work for me.  People with shorter hair have said they work fine, but I found I needed significantly more length to work with.  And, yes, once I had enough length, it really was just that easy.

had the same problem with the sticks... i just twist and keep twisting until it doesn't look like a bun anymore and more like a creative mess... hair stick weaving/knitting perhaps?

I usually just put my hair in a tight ponytail low on my head.  I then twist and wrap the ponytail around it's self and secure it with a second elastic band.  Then I cover the entire bun with a fine hairnet that matches my hair color.  I have a black jet bun cap so I'll put that over the entire bun and secure it with black bobby pins.  I learned the hairnet trick when I has a ballerina in training as a child.  That was a quick and easy way to hide and control the flyaways caused by layered hair. 

P.S. my hair is med to thick shoulder length hair.

I second the hair donut idea, but sometimes they look... well... weird. haha. I've gotten in the habit of just using a full, thick-ish scrunchie in the same way is described for using the donut. Hair in a regular ponytail,  put the big scrunchy around once or twice, then bend over and adjust the hair.

My hair is past my tail bone and like silken threads, but healthy to the tips.  My grandmother use to help me by putting it in a ciffron <Sp> for ballet, but later on when I did it myself I braided it and did bobbypins. 
The problem I ran into is that to hold up that length of hair I had to use ALOT of bobby pins, and they gave me a head ache.

The best bun I have found for very long hair is make a braided pony tail. The make a granny knot in it thepull the long end, and twist the knot until it reaches the base of the pony tail.  once snug, wrap the excess braid around the knot decorativly.  With this technique I only need 4-6 bobby pins.  Top, bottm and side, then 2 for insurance.  Much less head ache for me.

You can also leave the tail hanging out and curl it.  The only problem I get is that people keep telling me "You have such a fake looking hair piece."

ok this is my favorite bun, and it works on all types (i have a very mixed family) and many lengths of hair, as short as the bottom of your neck

its called the sock bun

1) pull your hair into a ponytail of where you want the bun to be, use gel or whatever else you use to keep the hair slick and pushed back

2) once you have the pony tail, roll a sock up (horizontally) to make a long tube, and wrap it tightly around the ponytail, either tuck the end underneath the ponytail or secure it with another ponytail wrap

3) once you have the sock secured...fan your hair around the sock, make sure it covers the sock and tuck it over the sock and then secure your hair with one more scrungee.  you should now have a donut looking bun, and extra hair sprayed out at the ends...

4) take the extra hair and twist it and wrap it around the bun, secure it with bobby pins
