Now that my faire season is almost over the Pink pirate has thrown another challange at me.  This year my challange was to upgrade the Flamingo brother's.  I was able to turn just the basic pink pirate I made 2 years ago into the wonderfully fully lined suit style w/ welted pockets pirate coat  and vest of the new Pink Pirate.  It made it's debute at Scarby opening day this year.
The only thing that wasn't upgraded was his trousers. Sadly after 3 seasons of wear they are in need of replacement.  I am planning on salviging the waist band, leg bands and all the trim.  Because I'm a fabraholic I actully bought the whole bolt of pink linen so I 'should' have enough to remake his pants so they are poofier and longer for him.

Now the grand challange..... ::listens for drumroll::
I have been asked to remake Sir Roland.  Sir Roland was a character the rogue played in a play called "Captain Blood".  He is a nobleman during the 1750's -ish.   We are going to base it on the clockwork men from Dr Who's "The Girl in the Fireplace" . It is to be made of velvet, gold trim, lace , gold buttons and everything.  Yes I know I'm nuts but I think it will look amazing.

I'm thinking of using the J Ryan coat as a base.  What do all of you think?  Oh and a place where I can get Plum colored velvet.
It is kind of strange watching your personal history become costume.

Is this a private thread, or meant for everyone's 2011 plotting?  ;D

Lady S, I've heard *nothing* but good things about the JP Ryan frock coat, and the one JP Ryan pattern I made (caraco) was the best pattern I've ever, ever used, hands down. So I think you can't really go wrong there.

Plum velvet? Fashion Fabrics Club has several things that come up in a search for "purple velvet," though nothing that looks like the deep plum silk velvet I have in my stash. Purple is apparently a big color for fall 2010, though, so you might start haunting the good fabric stores in your area (I bought mine locally, years ago).

As for me, there's so much I want to do! A military jacket to go with the Much Ado garb (maybe 2?), plus sleeves and chemises to finish off my & MIL's outfits... I *really* want to get going on the Promenade kirtle... and I want to finish the curved-front-opening dress I started this year. But FIRST, I'm using my Simplicity corset pattern to make a damask kirtle from. 2011 is the year for Kirtle or Bust for me, I think. If I don't manage one, I honestly think I'm going to retire from costuming.

Oh this is a public thread.  You can start plotting for 2011 now.  ;D

Oh I got wonderful plum velvet about 14 years ago.  I ended up making a bodice for me (still in the UFO pile)  with it.  Saddly I wish there was enough of it to make his coat out of.  Plum purple is my favorite color. :)  When he said this is what he wanted I was VERY happy.  I get the scraps to play with  heee....   ;D
I have already started looking for the velvet.  We have made friends with the local Joanne's clerks.  We can place orders for velvet AND use a 50% off coupon on the order.  We just have to find the velvet.  same goes for the buttons.  If we find the one we want we can place the order during  a 50% Entire Stock even and get a great deal. We did that for the 40 buttons needed for the pirate outfit.
Now just need the trims.  I am excited to do it but it will be a challenge.  The only thing I want but not sure where to find is the woven tailor's canvas to use as interfacing in the coat.  If I am making something THIS nice, I want the best.  Last time we priced it out, to buy this coat it was going to be run $1000 bucks!

Depending on how authentic you want the military coat I would recommend as a base the McCalls civil war coat.  Make a nice military suit block,  OR I managed to get my hands on a historically accurate Dragoon's coat pattern.  I'll look up what brand it is if you want me to :) Cost me a collage students fortune ($25+?) but it was worth it.

Lady Stitch have you tried B. Black and Sons for the canvas? (Not sure which type you are looking for)

They have a good selection, including french collar canvas.

My plan for 2011 is to:

*Make a Roman styled Renaissance dress (Roman as in the city, not the Roman empire)
*Finishing the embroidered camicia
*Make a Phantom of the Opera Masquerade costume
*Finish a wedding dress
*Make another Renaissance apron and partlet (I need a lot more of this stuff...)

I still have so much left for 2010! But for 2011, I already know I plan to make an alternate bodice (a regular one, as opposed to my currently in progress doublet bodice), something a little more Medieval for Costume College, something later Victorian (maybe a steamy bustle look), and hopefully I'll finally make that 1600s gown that has been in my plans for the last two years.

Plum is supposed to be the next big color, but it might not hit the fabric stores until after January. After all, the designers have to get their hits in first.

My daughter has decided she wants a German gown, ala Princesses of Saxony
I have never done one of these, so it will be an engineering challenge.  ;D

I love this company.  They helped me out so much when I was doing these custom cloaks a while back.  They cut me a deal on an end of bolt heavy black wool.  They have the hair cloth interfacing that I would want.  Good golly it is $13 bucks a yard!  It is what i wanted, and drool over to work with.

Donna, I wish you luck on your project.  You are going to need it.  ;D

Same here! It's so hard to get everything finished, isn't it? ;)

For 2010/2011 (I'm just going to combine them in my head now), I'm planning to finish my renaissance corset, make 2 new noble gowns, do some intense beading on the gowns I already have, make a cloak/coat thing, a partlet, a new chemise, and die of shock if I actually get it all done :D
Sometimes you can't wait for the storm to pass; you have to just get out there and dance in the rain.

ArielCallista

what I need for 2011 is more chemises and skirts! I'm also planning on a more epic patchwork skirt than my last one...

I really hope I will have more free reign to make amazing non Ren things for class and such...
Things are shaping up to be...
Pretty. Odd.

Not really garb, but interesting projects:

A kilt!
A single-skin ultra light weight bivvi tent

Butch

I wish to make a new set of garb for my son; a doublet with removeable sleeves and a shirt with sleeves made from that blackworked linen.

For myself, I will make a GAOP era U.S. Marine uniform to counter the pirates at the pirate weekend!  It just so happens that there is a retired Marine lives in my area, who has done a great deal of historical research in this area.  I should be able to put something together quite nicely!

Also, wish to finish the two full circle cloaks for my son and myself.  They gore are cut and paired; now all I must do is sew them, make and attach the collars, and then dye the cloaks.  Easy, right?!

Lady Kathleen of Olmsted

I am planning a new gown for me as well as the Queen of Hearts from AIW before CONVergence.

Then Victorian/Steampunkish clothes for my sister and Niece.

I still have a green wool Florentine gown to finish and a Venetian gown to start.

Dona C, I can't wait to see the progress on your Cranach gown--do please remember to post pix as you go! I don't think we've really had a Cranach gown on the boards yet.

I don't technically have time to do anything, but I've pre-washed my purple damask (tablecloths) for the kirtle project, and have been studying skirt options and cutting diagrams online. Just watch: I'm going to skirt-diagram myself into not making this! Ha!!
