"Green Tent" Aspects?
« on: January 25, 2011, 11:24:33 PM »
Good day.  I am a hospitality director at a young soft site faire.  What kind of things would you like to see in the way of a "green tent"?  Of course, we had food last year at our faire.  I tried to arrange for chair massages for performers & volunteers by massage techs but that fell through at the last minute.  I'll try to use a chiropractor's office for that this year.  What am I missing that performers would like to see?

If we had a green tent at my event? Water, gatorade, snacks, fans/misting fans/heaters depending on the weather, lots of seating.

I agree with Colleen; lots of seating, preferably under some sort of shelter, and water are the essentials. A full-length mirror is extremely helpful, perhaps with a couple of smaller mirrors.

Massag... What?  Where the heck is your faire, I want to work there!
Most green rooms or tents have water, shelter, some even had heat. A few had food, of sorts. Even fewer had coffee.  Seating would be nice.

Now, when I played the Nyon Festival, in Switzerland, the green room had Couq au vin, Chicken Cordon Bleu, and other fine French food, Wine, Beer and ... other refreshments. But then again, The Beach Boys and other headliners used the same facility.... that was a nice green room!
If the rum's gone, so is the fun

Mirrors, that's a good one. Private performer-only toilets (extra large for the hoop skirt crowd) would be nice too for sites that dont have flushers. I always hate having to break that certain image when standing in line with patrons for the potty.

I feel like backstage privies are a necessity. There's no better way to spoil the illusion, IMO, then to have a pee next to Queen Elizabeth. :D

Separate privies are good, especially in the case of faeries who have to de-wing to use the loo.  This would destroy the illusion unless done off-site.

I had not thought of full-length mirrors but that makes sense.  I bought a misting system for my garage last summer.  That would work great as our "green tent" is a picnic shelter.  Some years we may need it as our faire is in mid-September.

We had a handicapped privvy onsite last year.  It was large enough to easily get out of & into garb when using.

Thanks for the great suggestions!  Keep 'em coming.

In addition to all the others... Having a Large jar of Pickles will help out any with heat issues.  Even If you are providing some type of food, I would say trailmix/ nuts without salt.  Crackers and peanut butter.  Shaded seating.  If the area is to be cast / performer only area then the area needs to be out of view of all patrons, so the performers and let down their hair or hike up their skirts.  If you have people who smoke, then make an area that is away from the main area and still out of site for them.

I've heard of NFL teams giving their players pickle juice to re-hydrate them.  Good idea.  I bought lots of watery fruit last year for our green tent.  It was on a less-frequented end of the faire.

If I may: pickles are infinitely preferable to pickle juice. Pickles, oranges, and water with ice are about the best food I can think of for a backstage area.

Make them the good crisp, crunchy pickles, though, and keep them cool!  Hot pickles are never very appetizing...
