Ok...I'm proud of my little kilt I did today (Thursday). I've still got some finishing touches, I'll finish it in the morning...and have pics next week of it in use. This is for Windland's little brother, Hunter...he's 7. I used no pattern, and only had a pair of his shorts for size reference.

This is material I bought for another purpose, and have extra...

Pinning the pleats. I've never done pleats.

All the pleats pinned.

Pleats ironed.

Pleats sewn. I know...it's cheating, but it's for a rambunctous kid!

Hidden waistband for sturdiness of pleats.

Since it's for a kid, I thought a rustic look would be good, so I frayed the bottom and side of the top flap.

Front of the kilt. I've still got to add straps and buckles to the top.

The back. I didn't have any starch when I ironed it earlier. I'll be ironing the pleats again. *sigh*

I put velcro on the inside where the bottom flap meets the back, I figure it's more forgiving of me not having measurements...and him growing. The kilt will be a bit too long right now, but again I figure that means he can wear it longer.

I'd really love some feedback, as this is the first kilt I've attempted and I did it in 4 hours with no pattern or references...just what I remembered seeing on other guys. I couldn't even get online to look at kilts before I started this. Oh!, and I didn't know I was gonna be doing this till Wednesday evening!! LOL

Tammy, that is Awesome!!!  I'd say you were paying pretty close attention to those other guys, or at least to their kilts!  ;)  LOL  It's gorgeous, and I can't wait to see the pics of it being worn!  Great job, hon!

Kate and I thank you for the compliment.

Indeed yes.

I still maintain that I do not make hats...  I just pretend.   ;D

Then Kate, we have been "pretending" for a long time now when it comes to making hats!!! ;) They look great!!!

Well I just figured out what I have to do before we can even consider going to faire....

1.) Dresses for my 2 daughters - I will keep them simple and they will consist of a chemise and some sort of over dress.  Fabric for the over-dresses already purchased and prewashed.
2.) One or two skirts for myself - one in black and one in another color.  Black fabric already purchased, but not yet washed.
3.) A full-length chemise for myself - need to purchase fabric for this and will most likely do so in the next couple of days.
4.) A pair of pants for my hubby - once he makes up his mind what color he wants I can buy the fabric and get started on these.

The kicker?   Faire is on June 5th!  I guess my life will consist of doing nothing but sewing for the next month.  *sigh*  See you in a month! LOL

I have been sewing, but not as much as I wanted.  I have 7 days until the first faire of the season........
Sewing, sewing, sewing.  Did I mention sewing???
So my list has changed a little...

1.) Completed one kirtle for my youngest daughter.  Older daughter changed her mind on the color she wanted, so I had to buy and prewash some new broadcloth.  It's currently in progress.  Haven't started on either of their chemises, but they are easy enough to whip off this weekend.

2.) I ordered a beautiful skirt and bodice online, and a friend gave me and old skirt and bodice that is too small for her.

This is the one my friend gave me.  If I don't get the one I ordered in time, at least I have something to wear to the first faire.
So I just need to make one more skirt for myself.  Will be done this weekend too.
3.) No new chemise for me this year.  I'll just use the one I already have.
4.) Lovie changed his mind on what he wanted to wear - actually I convinced him to go with something "simpler" and wait until he sees what everyone else is wearing at faire before he makes me jump through hoops to slave over some garb he won't ever wear again.  He decided on a simple bard style shirt in off-white. (McCall's 4862-B)

I found some beige medical scrubs pretty cheap, so I just have to take the pockets off the derriere. The doublet he wants me to make (Simplicity 4059) will have to wait for the second faire because with only 7 days left until the first faire of the season, I just won't have time.  Hmmm.... Maybe I need to teach my Lovie how to sew his own garb.......

Tripletap

Cool kilt Tammy, another project I am gonna have to get started!
Aelyn, that simplicity pattern seems to be pretty popular, you could tell your hubby if he decides to start sewing his own garb, he won't be the only guy doin that.

Hoowil

Well, it may not be wearable, but it is a sewing project for faire. The kids got one of those canopied wagons from Grandma, and I decided to make my own canopy for it. The top is done, with the scallops, which are double sided, different colors, and piped in canary yellow. The actual top it a bottom cloth, as I had some, and figured it would hold up well under weight and general wear and tear. Set into top, not visible in the picture, is a heavy cord which will act as a curtain rod. I am just now starting the sides. Its a diamond motley style curtain in the same colors, four part, that will be openable and wrap around when closed to give the little ones some shelter from weather or sun for nap time. So far this thing has been a learning experience, as I was over confident on how simple it should be. My math and measurements for just about everything has been off, and needed to be adaptend so far. But, considering there is no pattern that I know of for this, and the model is odd shaped, and flexible, I think its going smashingly well so far.

Hoowil, that is SMASHING!!!  Simply brilliant. Huzzah!

One thing you might think about in subsequent versions is using a *white* colored canvas for the top, as it will be quite a bit cooler in the sun than black.

We want pictures of it being used.  ;D

Hoowil

I had thought about using white, for just that reason. Aside from the fact that the black was an old stash item, I figured it would be easier (or less in need of) cleaning.

Lady Lil

I love the idea of the covered wagon!! It is as cute as can  be. I don't have small children anymore, but there are plenty of times that I wished I had something to haul my stuff, rather my families stuff in. Great Job.

The handsewn eyelets are done, I'm going to go ice my fingers now.  ;)
