I posted this on my facebook, but I'll post it here too.

This is a work in progress Air Kraken hunter setup.

The boots and pants are thrift store finds, the belt is from Target, and the shirt is Russian military surplus.

To be added at a later date, the goggles which I ordered this morning, my kepi with lettering and badge, a jacket, a weapon, and holster for holding the ammo for said gun. As well as various small accesories that I hav't decided on yet.

Phoenix, I love this look!!!  Are you looking for the tailored para-military look jacket, or more of a bomber style?  Have you thought about altering one to fit?  The thing I love about S/P is that the "deconstructed" look is definitely just as hot as, if not actually preferred over, the very polished, professionally tailored styles.  Taking something apart at the seams to add panels, gussets or lacing is definitely well received in all the hot S/P fashion circles, and the sky's the limit as far as design and construction goes, or so it seems!!!

I just love the freedom of it all...  :D

I actually have a jacket but it needs (serious) modifications if I were to use it. I just need to decide if that will be the one or should I keep on looking. I'll try to get a picture of it tonight so maybe I can get some opinions on it. Were I to get it modded I wouldn't feel so bad as it is another thrift store find.(all told this entire set-up so far has run me maybe 25 dollars, the most expensive bit is the shirt)

Also were I to mod it what would I want to do with it.

Decisions, decisions decisions....

Edit add

Maybe split it up the back so it can be laced up kinda like a corset....hmmmm

And that's both the fun part... and the crazy-making part!!!  ROFL

How about buckles instead of lacing?  Just a thought...

A lot of the shops at MIRF had Steampunk'ish stuff on display this weekend. Loosely translated, that means I'm in trouble because we now have 3 kids wanting new outfits!  ::)

I know exactly what you mean, Jon!  My 8 y/o is already collecting pieces for her SteamPunk look, but at least she's well versed in the art of Garage Sale-ing...  She used to abhor it, but now that she knows she can get something if it's garb related (pretty much no matter what it is, if the price is right) she just can't wait to go!!!  It's really cool that she's not afraid to haggle, either, because she can get stuff for a song, whereas they just look at me like I'm trying to steal from them if I ask for a lower price...  ROFL  She spots for me, also, and has found several accessories that I would have completely missed!!!

Now if only there were ever any S/P events here...

She's only 8? Oh ya, you are in trouble for sure!  ;) I don't know if we have any Steampunk events around here. I'll have to do some research.

Tonight I cut out & pinned my tan cord explorer walking skirt, using this Victorian pattern:  http://trulyvictorian.com/catalog/291.html

Although the pattern calls for 7 panels, I added two side panels of fabric that has line drawings of the London Bridge, Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower, Arc d'Triophe, etc., w/a background of compasses, etc.  These two panels will be inverted pleats and the sides will be connected w/wide wale rust stips and highlighted w/antique button reproductions (gotta go buy some more buttons to replace the jacket buttons & maybe add some to the sleeves)

Finally once completed, I will probably add some cargo pockets and maybe trim the hem w/some grosgrain ribbon.
Sveethot!

Jon,
At least with the SteamPunk garb it's just as much fun to design it, find it and make it as it is to buy it, and she's really quite the budding little designer, so I'm not too worried about it yet!  At the moment I'm a bit more focused on her desire for a belt dagger to go with her ren garb!!!  :o  But it was actually her eye that spotted the perfect parts for my S/P weapon, so I'm thinkin' she's got the "Garbing Gift"...  LOL

Phoenix, I'm going to try that site right now... and hold my breath hoping for something happening here in my area!!!  Thanks for the info!

Taffy, the skirt sounds so gorgeous!!!  I just can hardly wait to see it all put together!!!  ;D

Jon.

There are small steampunk groups that do things like dress up and play croquet at the old Packard plant or have picnics at Greenfield Village.  My friends and I have done the steampunk thing for their Halloween weekends.  Mostly, I think people go to the local cons and dress up (I guess ConFusion's theme was steampunk last year).

There is also the rumor that there is going to be a huge World Steam Expo in Dearborn next Memorial Day.  The only thing I've been able to find on it is this myspace page which makes me wary of how real it is.

Rani Zemirah

I'm envious of places that actually have events where people dress up and have fun...  We have Faire here, but it's a one weekend event, at least the one closest to me, anyway.  Oklahoma isn't really a mecca for the imaginative, unfortunately!   :-\

Guess I just need to move...   :D
