I hope you guys aren't too disappointed by the ruins that are barely there. I find them interesting if for not other reason than to speculate why a castle was no longer needed in that area.

I haven't dug deep enough into the thread, but have you done any of the castles in Afghanistan? Including the Castle of the Infidel built by Alexander the Great.

Just giving more opportunity to keep this thread on castles going for a long time to come.... ;D

I check out "Castle of the Day" each Friday.  I like to look at all the castles for the week.  I'm especially impressed with the 8/8/11 castle.

I wish I could have found more photos of Doggenhout for you then. But the castle on the east side of the town seems to attract most of the photographers.

And I have done some castles in Afghanistan, at least the ones I could find. I'll do more as the 'a' comes up again.

So pretty! I love all the pointy turrets of the French castles. :)

Most of those are seventeenth century additions to discourage pigeons since the tower tops were no longer needed for lookouts and siege weapons.
But they are pretty much what pops into anyone's mind when they try to picture a castle.

DonaCatalina, I absolutely love these castle posts!  You've posted so many; have you begun repeating any of them?

nope.
There are over 3000 castles in Belgium alone.
I should live so long!  ;D

I'll be taking a vacation trip to the UK Lake District at the end of September, and have plans to visit & photograph several castles while we're there.  When we get back, and I've had time to process and post the photos, I'll let you know the link to the set on my Flickr account.

I found out today that my son (through his mother) is a direct decendant of Robert Appleby, Lord of Barnard Castle, circa 1619.

That is pretty cool. My husband is descended from Duncan Irvine and one of our good friends is descended from MacBeth. We joke about the family 'feud'.

Compliments on the Castle of the Day thread, DC.  Much appreciated to see these and to learn about them.

Not that I'm biased, or anything, but I like 'em...  ;)   ;D

Wow-Wee!!!

One of you photography types needs to go to Hemishofen, Switzerland and get some better photos of the castle. Satellite photos show three walls of a trapezoidal keep and the remains of a round tower. But I can't find ground level photos.
