Very smart!  But I have to ask - WHICH English civil war?  There were several, you know...   ;)

The Anarchy (1135–54) (Stephen and Matilda)
The Revolt of 1173–74 by Henry the Young King against Henry II.
The First Barons' War against King John (1215–17). (Magna Carta)
The Second Barons' War against Henry III (1264–67).
The Despenser Wars against Edward II (1321–26).
The Glynd?r Rising, a Welsh rebellion that would lead to the Hotspur Uprising, who would threaten the throne of Henry IV (1400–15)
The Wars of the Roses (1455–87)
    The English Civil War (1642–51)
The First English Civil War (1642–46)
The Second English Civil War (1648–49)
The Third English Civil War (1649–51)
    The Monmouth Rebellion (1685)
    The Glorious Revolution (1688)

Anea!!!!!! Where have you been?! WE MISSED YOU!!!! (flings herself atop Anea like a giant virtual puppy.)

Your Roman gown is absolutely lovely and elegant, and as always your research and knowledge is amazing. You're so generous to share it with the rest of us. ((hugs))

Thank you Gem (and all you others) for awesome comments on my Roman dress.  :D I wish I had more time to hang out in this forum, I miss you all and your wonderful creations. But it's totally costume porn to browse through here once a month. Daaaarn. Lots of talent in one place.

Looking at all the things everyone has created I am blown away! This was my first attempt at sewing a complete look rather than modifying a pre-existing garment. I managed to sew one seam in the underskirt before my machine quit and i ended up sewing the rest of the gown entirely by hand. It's the Simplicity pattern 2589. I learned alot from this project, primarily that while faux silk looks pretty it's hard to work with and VERY hot to wear. Overall I ended up happy with how it turned out but there are a great number of things I'll be doing differently with my next project.

Very pretty, Lady Helen!  It looks blue-er in your avatar.  I'm assuming it's the same gown?

LadyHelenofCarvylle

Thank You! Yes, it is the same gown, it looks much bluer under natural light which was a stroke of luck since I bought it online with no swatch to look at before hand.

DonaCatalina

Very lovely Lady Helen.
Yes, stick with natural fibers.

CenturiesSewing

Family medical issues have kept me from sewing much this year, but I finally finished something!

Light weight black wool kirtle with hand pad stitched linen/cotton canvas for interlining/stiffening. Fully sewn in sleeves that let me raise my arm over my head without pulling!

A shot of the insides before I hand sewed in the lining, from all the way back in June.  :-[

The best I could do, not so washed out photo of the preemb. cotton for the shirt.

And the back! hand sewn spiral laced eyelets done with silk thread.

That came out great, CS!

What did you do with the set-in sleeves?  Did you use a gusset?  Any pics to share of that part?  The only time I tried sewing a gusset I absolutely HATED doing it.  I figure nobody should be looking at my pits anyway  ::)  but I'm curious to know how you did it.

Again, great job!!!

  Very nice!  amazing work.
I barely have enough time to do stuff on my sewing machine, much less by hand!
