I lucked out with the fabric.  I bought 10 yards of cotton velveteen on Ebay for $19.99. And shipping was $10, so it worked out to $3 a yard.  I believe Lady Kathleen used around 5 yards or so for the Irish dress, which means there is more fabric that will be begging in the future to become more garb!

Your dress is so pretty! I don't know what I like more, the dress itself or that the bear is wearing matching tartan. That's great! You look beautiful, very nice job.

My friend Maxine bought me the bear as part of my Christmas present.  The bear is holding a tartan bagpipe, don't know if you can see it in the picture.  When you press on the bagpipe, it plays Scotland the Brave.  We have more fun with that bear at faire.

Thanks to everyone for the comments about the gown.  I can only claim to have asked Lady Kathleen to make it.  Her talent is the real star!

ok I want to post :D

This is a pair of costumes I made for myself and my best friend for GARF this season. I love sewing, I've been doing it since I was a kid and I've been making costumes since I was 14. Amber and I do trades all the time, and I made her the gold dress in exchange for a favor she did for me a while beforehand. Both dresses were made primarily from stash, except for some trim that was purchased off the clearance rack at the local JoAnns. The majority of these dresses were made in a week (I had my dates wrong and found out the faire started sooner than I was planning) but afterward we added a bunch of details such as beads and trims.

My dress is a doublet style in a rusty red cotton brocade. I wanted something very regal. I ended up taking apart some very old mink collars laying around in my scrap box to use as fur trim. The underskirt, sleeves, and stomacher under the doublet are made of a dark blue shot taffeta that had gold vines embroidered. It was also in my stash but when I bought it about a year and something ago I think I paid $2.50 for two yards off the remnant table at a local interior decorating store. My favorite parts are the hat, which I made (it was actually cut to be a Tall Hat but I ended up just making it into an Italian Bonnet instead) and the partlet, which I made by hand based on a pattern in The Tudor Tailor. I picked an embroidery design I found on the Elizabethan costuming website and realized after I already drew out the pattern that I only had red floss, not black... however I think it turned out just fine. I also made the red twisted cord I used as trim by hand with a power drill and left over embroidery thread.

Amber's dress was made as a separate bodice and skirt. The red band around the bottom was sewn on top of the skirt and took the longest out of everything you see to get lined up and sewn correctly. Her dress was based on a venitian style from the mid to late 1570's... but I took artistic liberties because I was rather running out of time. She wanted a ruff, which we attached directly to the collar of the bodice. I had starched it five or six times but it wasn't standing up as much as she wanted... so she took it home, doused it in Got2b brand hairspray and now it stands up great. She made her french hood and added the pearls and whatnot on the bodice.

Both of us have things we want to add onto our dresses but for now they are most certainly in wearable condition and we're quite happy. The pictures here are from us getting ready for the TNRF on May 23rd, and we had the best time flouncing around in them.

Me lacing Amber into her bodice.

Pinning the chemise down as it kept wanting to slip out. She was wearing one of mine and it was a bit too big.

The two of us with our friend Alex who decided to be a Fairy. I helped her with her costume too but she made most of it from found pieces she had laying around.

Me posing for Alex's mom right before we took off out the door. My hat was apparently turned around backwards though I don't know how that happened.

Back of my dress.

Partlet

And my friends and I together at the end of the day.

Thank you for letting me post! Enjoy!

As Pirate Bob said, the red dress virtually GLOWED in the evening light!!!  Fantastic work and Lady Renee...you glowed as brightly as the dress!  Beautiful!
I'm not fat, it's just that a skinny body couldn't hold ALL THIS PERSONALITY! ;)

BazookaBaby, your gowns are beautiful!  I am also quite fond/envious of your partlet; the red looks great.

That was a remnant off a table at Decorating Mart, a local interior decorating fabric store here in Georgia. However, I believe the last time I was there, I saw the same thing still on the shelf. I'll go for you on Thursday, and if they have it don't mind taking pictures of it and pricing it, and finding out the name of the fabric and the maker so maybe you can find it online. If it's not online, then I can always do the pick up and mail thing for you too.

Thank you again everyone :D
