Lady L

Here's the french hood I finished. Never made one like this before.

Oooh, thats lovely Lady L! I might really need to overcome my fear of hats and try one soon. Thanks for all the compliments on the bodice. The woman who ordered it is a peasant on cast with Bristol, hence the plain lines and no ornamentation, but I think it stands alone quite well too :)

Lovely hats Lady K of O and Lady L!!!!

Lady L

Thanks for all the kind words!
I started sewing (mostly hand sewing) the next French hood, today. It's going better/faster the second time.  :)

Lorraine, if you are able to sew bodices, I am sure you could handle sewing this type of hat!

Even though using Plastic Canvas is faster than using Buckram and Millinery wire, I still prefer the latter method. Using Flannel for the mulling(underlining) gives more smoothness and strength to any Hat or French Hood.

Sorry Lady K, but I hate buckram. I bought some plastic canvas, but I didn't like that either.
I used 3mm foam and sewed wire to that. Love how that handles and it's very smooth, no need for flannel. I like that the foam won't wilt if it gets wet. It's easy to sew through and zigzag the wire to it. It holds the shape well and is lightweight. It's also very inexpensive, I can get one hat out of one sheet, with some leftover.
That's my tip for the day! :)

Yeah, I used timtex in Hawthorne's tunic, but it was too thick for the french hood. To each their own, I guess.

I took some photos of my grandaughter in her new garb, which she said was the "best ever!"
So, here they are!

The bodice I made from fabric that was leftover from another project. The chemise fabric I had in my stash. The deep blue skirt and hat fabric is corduroy that we bought on clearance at Joanns, for $2.00 yd. I also drafted the bodice and skirt.  ;D

It worked so well in this one I did that I'll not bother with the wire next time!
