Thank you.

Hats are fun and yet challenging to make. They do require time because most of the work is hand done. What I use the sewing machine for is to zig zag baste the Buckram layers for the brim and top crown, sew the bias tape to cover the Millinery wire,  the fabrics for the brim, as well as the back seam for the bottom part of the crown.

The Hat patterns by Lynn McMasters are very well detailed in their instructions. Follow the same procedures for just about any pattern in her line as well as hat patterns out by the Big 3, anyone can do hats.

The place where I order the higher quality Buckram is from http://www.judithm.com/ A little more expensive, but so worth it. That is where I will order all my Millinery supplies from now on.

Photos of Lady de Laney's newest Hat, an Arched Elizabethan Tall Hat...

The hat is made from 2 layers of sturdy buckram, millenery wire at the Brim, lower and upper parts of the crown, as well as Crown top. Bias tap covers the wire. There is also layers of flannel(mulling) to provide a smooth surface for the velveteen. I used Duct tape to secure the crown at the back seam. Who would have thought that Duct Tape would prove such a useful tool for hat making?

I secured the Velveteen to the Crown top with Duct Tape  before I set in the rest of the Crown fabric for hand sewing. The Brim has a sweat band that also secures the hat on the head. The inside of the Crown is lined in Green Cotton Broadcloth. The Crown is hand sewn down onto the brim. I did not find a suitable brooch to finish off the trim that makes the hat band. I figure she has one that will work. The brim is finished with 2 strips sewn together 2 1/2" wide for a bias tape in the velveteen.

Very elegant. I love it!

What a wonderful hat Lady Kathleen!! I've been tempted to try one, but I'm too afraid to buy the pattern.

I just finished a back lacing bodice for a customer in Bristol. She's rather top heavy (29" waist and 41" bust), so I used the same boning layout that I used on the burgundy bodice last month, this one came to 25 1/2" spring steel bones. It has detachable straps which I just kinda set on there for the pic since it didn't fit my dummy too well, and I used a bronze colored cotton to make the piping.
