Preferred Patterns?

At my theater they don't have to be perfectly historically accurate, but at least in the ball park. This is why I typically like to use Simplicity patterns but I have found some good ones from both McCalls and Butterick, but it is hit and miss.   I rarely pay full price for them.  If I have to pay more that $2 for it, I don't need it.
It is kind of strange watching your personal history become costume.

Welcome to the madness! Commerical Patterns like Simplicity when strapped for cash is somerthing you can do and will come out very well, but you need to look at portraits and well come to places like this for advice!!!

You can also check out portraits of the era, and then try to find people who adore making garb in your area, you can connect with the SCA or even a LARP group, so you can learn with and from them!  Sometimes if you know people who go to the Ren Faires near you there might be a group in which you can go and ask questions and fitting. Also others might be able to drape on you, so you  can learn how or just have someone make a kick butt set of mock-ups!
