Don Afonso Henriques (1112-1185) found the village abandoned. To encourage their repopulation and defense, he gave the village the Charter Act. Although this document does not show a date, is believed to have been passed in 1158. The basic structure of the castle dates from this time.

Izborsk Is a castle is a rural locality (village) of the same name in Pechorsky District of Pskov Oblast, Russia.
