OK, I think I got it!  Wow, it must have been time consuming (and a bit confusing!).  Were the 21 squares, and the side length,  based on a measurement of your waist or that's just how many it is?

Oh my gosh!!!  How did you make the skirt?  That is awesome!

The skirt is comprised of 21 squares edged in lace, 21.5" on each side, for a total of over 25 yds at the hem of the skirt.

You can kind of see, in this in progress pic, how the squares are assembled.

If you look at each square as a diamond, the top two sides of each are sewn together, leaving 1" unsewn at the top point on either side. (Luckily, the one inch points wound up being a pretty perfect fit for sewing on the bodice. I'm not sure what would have to be done if you were making it for a really small waist.) And then each of these points was whipstitched to just below the natural waist of the bodice.

I hope this clears it up! If not, I can try to take some close-up pics of the squares.

I can just imagine that skirt done in multi colors for a fairy outfit.   Would be fantastic.

Maybe in a crinkle cotton, or even a floaty chiffon...

Lovely work, ladies!

It's been so long since I made the skirt part that I'm not positive where I got the 21.5" number. I think I may have made that up based on the length of skirt I wanted. The original did have the 21 squares, though - I know that was listed on the display plaque.

Kate XXXXXX

The latest from Jolly Dicey!  This is my Mock Kirtle and Pirate Gown pattern graded and tested for customer use.  Sample garments from gash stash!  I drafted the patterns, made up all except the gray one (made up by Su, my sewing partner).  The chevrons on the sleeves were my idea, the square epaulets hers.

And a petticoat to go with the pirate gown, plus some chemises.

There's more to come!  We've been busy...

Lady Kathleen of Olmsted

Well done, Kate!!

I realised I never posted my costume for/from the Tennessee Renaissance Festival this year! The dress itself was made by two other cast members at our festival (the lady I rented this from happens to be my body twin. :P). I did the handbeading on the skirt and the accessorising/final pulling together of the whole ensemble.
