Khutyn Castle monastery is situated on the right bank of the Volkhov River some 10 km north northeast of Velikiy Novgorod, Russia.
map coordinates 58.587222, 31.395
The cloister was founded in 1192 by the monastery's first hegumen, the former Novgorodian boyar Oleksa Mikhailovich, whose monastic name was Varlaam. His noble background may explain why Khutyn is such a unique place, being foremost a castle in its configuration, with church and monastery buildings being secondary.

Leslie Castle is located outside the village of Leslie, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
map coordinates 57.3125, -2.666389
Not to be confused with a castle of the same name in Ireland, the original castle was built in the fourteenth century. The building that stands there now has been restored to that state. In the intervening centuries since its construction, the castle had been much modified and then left to ruin.

Bina was a castle in the village of Bina in the Nitra Region of south-west Slovakia.
map coordibnates 47.921021, 18.642572
Romans built a fortress here and in 173 emperor Marcus Aurelius wrote his famous diary in this region during the wars against quadi in the Marcomannic Wars. Later, after the foundation of the Árpád age Hungary, king Stephen I of Hungary gave the region to Bény, son of Hont, the count of the county Hont. Today a solitary round tower on Roman foundations, that was converted to a chapel, is all that remains. Interestingly, the current population is  about 90% Hungarian, 9% Slovak and 1% Gypsy.

Brougham Castle is located about 2 miles (3.2 km) south-east of Penrith, Cumbria, England.
map coordinates 54.653922, -2.718999
Founded by Robert de Vieuxpont in the early 13th century on the site of a Roman fort, it sits near the confluence of the rivers Eamont and Lowther. Its Roman origins explain why it is neither quite motte and bailey, nor a moated. DBaldock has graciously contributed some of the photos below.

A number of my photos had people in them, since a group of ~60 High School students from nearby Penrith were there at the same time we were.  You can see some of them talking with my parents in the shot above.  The stairs and some walkways of main tower are open to the public, allowing you to go almost to the roof level.

Take Care,
David Baldock

Castillo de Torres Secas is located in Torres-Secas, Spain
map coordinates 42.133873, -0.532510
The earliest record of the castle is from 1093, though it was built sometime before that date. The relative insignificance of the area is testified by the fact that very few records exist until the sixteenth century.

Shaizar, Shayzar or Saijar is a medieval castle and town in Syria.
map coordinates 35.267778, 36.566667
The hilltop town has changed hands many times since its ancient origins. The castle was probably built as it stands when the town became the property of the Banu Munqidh in 1081 when 'Ali ibn Munqidh bought it from the bishop. The Byzantines besieged it numerous times after this but failed to capture it.

Zbarazh Castle is a fortified defense stronghold in the Western Ukraine. No, I have no idea how to pronounce that.  ;)
map coordinates 49.666667, 25.772222
Evidence of the Castle of Zbarazh formation in 1393 can be seen in the Ruthenia fortress dating back to 1211 that was positioned somewhat away from current castle. Today this is a village of Zbarazky District located in the immediate proximity of Zbarazh itself and called the Village of Stary Zbarazh. At that distant time the old castle and the province was ruled by Gediminids Landlords Zbarazky. The new castle was heavily modified in the 1600's. There are still some ruins of the old castle on the hill.
