Stop tempting us not living in the US!!! :D

Rowen MacD, I would love to see that partlet. I still haven't found the perfect pattern/fit for my own partlet, so I'm stuck with an old rag... Or so it feels. So I love seeing what others whip together. So many beauties!

Hellooo ladies. </oldspiceguy> (I don't know where that came from, it's almost 5am and I'm maybe a little bit crazy...)

So I just finished my new bodice... and I wanted to share it with people who might appreciate it, and/or who might have some critique to give me. Forgive the single horrible picture; I'll try to take some more/better ones tomorrow (err... later today?).

I decided not to go with spiral lacing this time (I was craving symmetry, apparently) and metal grommets instead of my usual handworked eyelets. It's a different look... and I like it. This is also THE most comfortable bodice/corset-type garment I've ever made/worn, which is somewhat unexpected as it's my first project using steel boning. (But then, it's also my first bodice/corset made entirely with linen -- I am growing to LOVE this fabric!) I drafted the pattern based on the Effigy recreation tutorial on elizabethancostume.net, with a few minor tweaks that I can't remember, and an obvious difficulty figuring out strap length. If this was meant to be an undergarment, I wouldn't worry so much, but will it look silly like this, do you think? It'll be laced with black cord/boot-laces eventually, and worn over a proper shirt... but I'm not sure about it. I don't know exactly what I could do to fix it, either.

I'm in love with this bodice, but I wonder if it can be improved upon. Thoughts?

On a somewhat related note (see picture above), MAN skinny satin ribbon is a PAIN to lace with! I struggled for way too long trying to lace myself into this thing! haha.

My bodice straps are habitually too long. This is better.

Nothing really to add, but I want to say that this photo does a fabulous job of illustrating precisely how a period bodice should fit you, in comparison to modern clothing. You have it hitting *exactly* at your natural waist, which is really easy to see with the lower rise jeans you're wearing! Well done!

Very nice looking bodice.  The shoulder straps are fine - mine tend to be too short too and I either end up cutting them or just dealing with it.  :-)

Ribbon is evil.  Shoe laces are good.   But you already know that.

Have you considered ladder lacing?  It allows for symmetry but is also a period form of lacing.

One remedy for too short of straps is to measure the distance between the end of the strap and top of the bodice and then add 1/2" for seam allowance if making a Corset pattern into a Bodice.

Omit the 1/2" if Bodice is more like a Wearable Outer Corset.

Good job on the Corset/Bodice.

I figured you would want to see it ^_^ so I have have been looking for a picture of it.  The lady in question is a costuming major in college, she does incredible work.  I have her friended on FB, so I'm headed over there next to see if she has a close up of the finished partlet with her gown.  I know for a fact she wore it a few times last season.

Edit: Here it is- I wish I had a front view, but you get the idea

OOH Rowan!!  That sleeve is so delicious!!

I plan to make myself a new Noble Gown for the 2012 Minnesota Renaissance Festival. The fabic I have in my stash won't allow me to make full sleeves. So I was planning on making the Sleeve in the photo and have a long Sleeve made out of some Tarnished gold Embroidered Dupioni Silk left over from a previous commisssion.

I made this Spanish Surcote, circa 1560's/1570's for a friend.  It's out of gold damask, black velvet, and black velvet/gold design pattern.

She does wonderful work doesn't she? I would kill to have her figure ^_^.
She and her fiance play nobles, pirates and a fairy king and queen.  She sews all of their costumes.
I know she uses MA patterns for her hats and hoods, but I'm pretty sure she drafts all her gowns (the one she is wearing is a work in progress, she plans to bead the entire bodice and skirt edges) from scratch.
The bodice you see there is completely boned all the way round, every 1/2 inch.  She uses different sleeves and under-sleeves to change the look.   Very period.
That wonderful beaded and poufed partlet has a removable ruff, with pearl buttons and loop closure at the throat,  and it can be worn buttoned up completely covering the bosom as shown, or with the bottom spread open above the bodice line.

I know that gown!! She debuted it at KCRF in 2010!

(Just for fun, here is the same woman as a fairy. Such a pity I didn't get her wings--they were spectacular! She does amazing work.)

Thanks!  I knew someone had it!  The one I posted was from Nebraska Renaissance Faire.  Isn't that gown and partlet to die for?  Such talent.

Oooh! She had gotten stuck in my shop during a rain storm for like 20 minutes and I was drooling over her partlet. She said that it took forever to do, I cant remember how she said that she did.
There was a handfull of little girls who were in awe of her it was really cute :-)

I can't wait to see this on a person. It looks scrumptious.
