Lady Kathleen of Olmsted

Progress so far on my new Elizabethan gown project.

Then I had a "dummy me" moment after looking at the photos. One of the straps is going in the wrong direction! I cannot believe I screwed that up! Oh well. I can take that apart easily enough and resew it.

The beading on the sleeves will be the same for the forepart to the underskirt. I plan to wear this gown at the annual Sci/Fi convention I go each July called CONvergence. I am doing an older Queen Elizabeth I for Mascqurade night . The theme is A Midsummer Night's Dream.

The Sleeve so far. I enjoy pearling. Pearls add so much to a gown.

More photos as I progress.

Wow... just wow!  I wish I was better at seeing trim and bling.  I can envision construction and rework standard patterns to create just what I want but I can never seem to "see" trim and other things to bump up my garb to the next level.  Well, I'm pirate so I guess I don't really  need a lot of that anyway.

Crimson!!!

Many of the Pirates I know wear a lot of bling! Rings, chains, earrings. Not to mention all the accessories that go with Pirates! They can be quite flashy!  ;)

Sometimes less is more anyway.  :-)   Some of the coolest outfits I've seen aren't the super flashy ones (sometimes, in my opinion, they can be quite tacky looking!   The equivalent of pink flamingo earrings and a light up necklace with Tammy Fay make up) but the ones that actually look like clothes.  A nice, well done, 16th century shirt, doublet, and britches is what a true pirate would have worn along with a knit cap on most days.   Check out the Mary Rose artifacts to see what sailors wore in period.   It's typically simple but it looks well put together when worn correctly.

The unfinished sleeve so far.

Close up of the beading. It is coming together.

Lady Kathleen - all that beading and pearls must require a lot of patience and persistence.  Those are lovely details.

It's a lot of fun to do, Irma. I save the  handwork for later in the day. That is what TV is for.  ;D

Here's my sister in law's Norse (Viking) garb for Saturday:

photo(8) par Isabella, on ipernity

I still need to add the straps and sew up the neckline as well as finish her undertunic, but she will have Norse garb!

I had a hard time adjusting my mindset when I switched from making English to making Italian garb. But I did catch on. Classy is classy. Let the fabric do the talking. When there is too much flas, trim, baubles going on, the subtle details cannot/will not be noticed.

The highest compliment for me is not to hear "Wow, that's stunning" - but rather:  "You looke like you stepped outof a portrait (or a woodcut)."

Great work everyone. It's cool to see someone actually doing Viking/Norse garb.
