Do you guys ever buy way more fabric than you need for a project...as in 8 yards when you only need a forepart out of it?  I don't think I do this on purpose, rather I forget how much of it I already have and keep buying it when I see it in the remnant bins because I'm terrified of coming up short or making such a big mistake that I have to re-do it altogether.

Another thing I do which has GOT to stop is buying fabric for a future project and later finding out that I don't LOVE it anymore and I can, or maybe have already, found a better one.  And of course I have WAAAAAAAY too much of it for the reasons I already mentioned.  Such a waste of money and space.  I guess I should only buy for current projects but it's so hard to remember that when I think I've found the *perfect* fabric (at the time).  Anyone else do this?

I'm going to copy you, Mithrin, with your measurement/swatch/binder idea.  GREAT idea!  Any time I'm about to go to JoAnn's I'll try to have it on hand so I don't go overboard.  Yet again.

I used to go thru the remnant bin at Hancock's and say "No, I don't need it."  Then, 2 weeks later I need it, go back, and it's gone.  >:( I figure as long as it's remnants it's a good deal so now I buy it no matter what!  ;D  Since I don't have a lot of sewing experience I also tend to buy more fabric than the pattern calls for.  But then I can use what's left for skirt trim, bodice front, sleeves, etc.  Especially if I want hubby and me to have outfits with matching pieces!  ;)

You can never have too much fabric, too many beads, too many scraps, too many craft projects, too many.......  :D

Of course I do!  When they have Red Tag Home Decorator fabric another 50% off, do you think I stop to think twice when I see a mauve textured silk at $3 a yard?  or a maroon embroidered satin for $5 a yard?  Heck, I buy the rest of the bolt!  Linen, 100% cotton duck, cotton velvet... I buy whatever I find.

And now I'm glad.. because of the economy, I am trying so hard to pay down my debt, and I have enough fabric to sew 10-20 projects, both Civil War and Renaissance, lining and fashion fabric, without spending another dime (except on cable ties!).  So don't feel bad...

Mythrin, that does sound like a great idea. I've started to inventory my stash. Putting a swatch and notes in a binder sounds like a faboo idea. I buy alot of fabric online, I started to post a copy of the fabric swatch and post the yardage in my online diary. That way I check the post before I buy more fabric online. No need to buy more if I can use what I already have. I'm trying, really.

Except for this weekend. Went to see friends. They took me to their JoAnns.
There is now a 20 yard bolt of green 100% silk in my car.
Hey, it was only $4.49/yard! Red tag decorator discount galore.

Well

It is the great 50% off of already marked down fabrics.  After speaking with my best friend, who never seems to have fabrics at all... for her 3 daughters and her hunny. I thought well I can pick up some from up here.  I found 9 yards of a peach-pink linen for GASP $2 bucks a yard, and then I found another 10 that would be awesome for an Italian Florentine Gown for her.   I found fabrics as low as $1.50 per yard so I had to pick them up right?

Then I hit the second Joannes which is close to my home and I found corduroys!! I found unwaled and baby waled cord for $2. bucks a yard so I picked up some for my son in red because that is his fav color and since it is not one of my own, I don't collect it by nature.

So by the time I had stopped this expedition? I had sunk 200.00 into it! OUCH then my best friend tells me she only needs like $50.00 worth so I am sending all the other back!!!  I am off to another JoAnnes, to get a refund on the things I don't want or need and check to see if they have any linen that would be worth it.

I know 12 step program on the way.

I did find a great fabric here it is:
Awesome huh?  Summer Liz on the way for that one!

I saw.. I went... I conquered!  Velvet with gold thread couched in a stripey pattern.. and a perfect pumpkin and gold tapestry for a noble jerkin to go under a red-orange velvet gown lined with white fur... and a few yards of chiffon for French hoods.. and thread was 50% off, too! but I kept it to under $50.... now I have to renew my vow NOT to go to Joann's again for at least a month..  ::)

Ignoring the fact that our wedding is in two months and that I'm supposed to be watching the bank account, I (with the blessing and assistance of my wonderful fiance) attacked the red tag sale and remnant bin yesterday.  He took a number and waited in the cutting line (about 15-20 people long) with a yummy gold damask while I shopped for list items.  While I never found the fabric that I went in for, I now have exactly what I need for an opening day gown.  Of course, I still have to go back so that I can finish the current project....

I also spent about $50.00 at the Joann sale, on Sat. Several pieces of linen and 2 pieces of cotton that were $1.99 yd.
Black cotton to line the next knight's surcoat.
Off white cotton for a chemise for my grandaughter.
Royal blue and rust linen for the burda medieval dress for my grandaughter.
Black linen for a tunic for Sir R.
Couldn't find what I wanted for myself.

Nice haul, people!  Keep up the good work!   ;D ;D ;D

I just made my first order from Fabric-store.com! I've ordered enough linen to make a medieval kirtle and an over tunic in green, as well as white linen for a veil, barbette and forehead hand.

Now I just have to wait for them to arrive!

oohhh my.
In the last week I have succumbed to fabricholism twice.
Last weekend I bought 2 full bolts of Organza at wally world at $1.50/yd one in sky blue and the other in silver grey, and 3 yards of white organza (its all they had).
Yesterday I bought almost 6 yards of a beautiful bluish smoke grey super thin cotton at joann's also at $1.50/ yd.

JoAnns has marked down several colors of the Signature Silks in the Home Decor Section - 54" wide Decorator Dupioni -- to half price. The regular price for these to-be-discontinued-soon colors is now only $8.99 a yard.

This meant I got my butterscotch silk on sale for approx $4.00 a yard during the home dec half off sale, with my 10% off total sale coupon.

(squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!)  ;D

They had Red, rose pink, butterscotch, lavender, a wedgewood blue, and a couple other simply scrummy colors marked down.  ;) Excellent!

...now where are my other coupons?....

We just got a JoAnn's, opened Feb 2.  I went yesterday and I was very good.  Only spent $15.  But, ooohhh, they had the coolest remnants I wanted soooo bad and Sari material that I want to make into skirts!  :o

That's the fabric I bought. You beat me pricewise with the 10% off coupon. I had it - why oh why didn't I use it?  :'(
