Hat Question

I need to make better hats to go with my noble garb. I ran into a girl at faire a couple weeks ago who was wearing a hat very similar to this one:



It went straight back and stopped at the crown rather than curving up and back down over the back of the head, but it was otherwise the same. She said made the frame by bending a wire coat hanger. I'd like to try this, but I'm hesitant without any more direction than "bend a wire hanger." Does anyone know where I might find directions online for something like this? And does this kind of hat have a name?

The hat is called an Attifet  and is most commonly seen in mid to late 16th c portraits.  Like this:

Just to let you know, there are as many theories on what the "Attifet" is/ how it was made as there are suggestions on how to make them.  The MOST important thing about this style is how you hair is worn underneath it.  Look at the paintings, and see how most of the time the curve is with the curve of the hair.  Yes, there are exceptions.  Sorry, this is a pet peeve of mine. 

Coat hangers will work fine, but I prefer a smaller wire, with a little more flexibility.

Butterick (B4210) has a pattern out for an attifet but I have yet to check it out but the picture makes it look promising. They call it the Elizabethan hat.

I made the Lynn McMasters Attifet pattern.  I sewed a hair comb on the inside both at the back and on top of the crown to keep it in place.  We were at Bristol over the holiday weekend and it was windy as all get out Saturday and this thing wasnt going anywhere off my head!

Check out Vogue patterns. They have a great set of 1930-40's vintage style hat patterns.  I have not made any of them but they are available.

There's an interesting discussion about this type of hat on the Elizabethan Clothing Tribes.net this week (http://tribes.tribe.net/elizabethan_clothing). Beware that they bill themselves as vehemently H/A, but it's a great place to learn stuff.

People have told you already it is an Attifet and I have a wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better pattern for you plus there is the Coif and Caul or escaffion, tall hat, riding hats really any hat you might want for Renaissance!

I know this thread has been dead for a little while, but I too need some help.  I am trying to make the Tall Hat in Margo Anderson's accessories patterns.  It is requiring me to cut 1D, 1E, and 1F out of plastic canvas.  I don't think I have lost my mind or part of my pattern, but I can't find these pieces.  Please help!

Marcello, you might try emailing Margo directly (link on her website). I seem to recall at least one of the hat patterns had pieces missing.
