There is no information about the exact origin of the castle. The evidence on the ground suggests that a small celtic oppidum was conjverted to a Roman castrum. The first medieval fortifications were begun by Don Afonso Henriques (1112-1185) in 1168.

Only a crumbling tower remains of this fortification that apparently started life as a Roman Castra. A Roamn road segment still runs through the site. It was in use as a toll castle in the fifteenth century.

From its high perch, Liebegg Castle over looks the town of Gränichen, Switzerland.

The builders of the castle were a branch of the same family who built Trostburg, which lies not far away. The eleventh century castle was completely rebuilt in 1561, leaving no trace of the original.

Place House, also called Fowey Castle,  is located in Fowey, Cornwall, England.

The original Tower keep withstood a siege by the French in 1475. Home of the Treffry family since the thirteenth century, the core of the current structure is a fifteenth century tower. A major expansion took place from 1564-1584.

Dajti Castle is a castle and restricted archaeological site in Albania.

The Castle site consists of the ruins of a Roman fortification and several dwellings. It belongs to late antiquity, probably having been built over Illyrian foundations. It lies at 1,200 m (3,900 ft) altitude on top of a hill, west-side of Mount Dajti, close to Tirana. The fortifications appaear to have been abandonded in the tenth or eleventh century.

Ushiberd is an ruined Iron Age fortress located upon a hill just outside the village of Ushi in Armenia.

Dating from the first millenia BC, the end of the castle's life seems to correspond with the building of the monastery. Just below the hill is Saint Sargis Monastery of the 7th–13th centuries.
