At this point I am not making booms this year. Apparently TRF has seen fit to find somebody else to do the fireworks.  Neither Jeff or Terre have replied to my emails.

Oh well, I will be there for most weekends. Hope to see everyone!

Is TRF even going to do fireworks this year? Most places around here cancelled fireworks on the Fourth, so I thought the chances were slim at best.

Without even a word to let you know?  Well, that's not really an appropriate way to do business... and I've been hearing more and more stories like this as the weeks go by.

PM, I'm so very sorry we won't be seeing your fire in the sky this season.  You always put on an impressive show, and it's always worth staying for, even after a long, tiring day of Faire.  Hopefully we'll get to see you in the lanes, however... and possibly even out in the camps!

I'm thinking it will depend on the rain.
If we don't get enough between now and then the burn bans may still be in effect, which means no fireworks.
If we get lucky and the monsoon season hits, then we'll probably have them.
Honestly, I could take it either way if Pyro isn't doing them, since no fireworks would mean patrons leaving earlier and an earlier drive back to Dallas for me.

But they've had the fireworks in other years even when there was a burn ban in effect.  We weren't allowed to have open fires in camp, but the fireworks went off every night.

But it wasn't as bad in the past as this year. We are currently in the third worst drought in written Texas history. For PM's sake I hope that is more the reason for no communication. Hell, they could be waiting for word from someone in the government for the ok. I do know that up in that area the drought is especially bad. The In-Laws lake in Magnolia is down somewhere around three to four feet.
On a long enough time line, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

I hope this will happen this year too.. this will me my husbands and mine's first time staying until close, so I really see some pretty lights in the sky!

If there is a ban... well... there is always mead/ale/what have you to remedy that!

I will be a little bummed if we can't have the bonfire at camp.  it is usually what keeps me warm when and IF it gets cold!

TRF is on private property so it is in some ways their discretion on the fireworks.  They still have to notify local fire departments and meet with them but they can't really stop them.  The difference between them and other firework shows is that the shell explodes at TRF and all debris falls on TRF property.  A show shot off Lake Conroe could effect private property.  This was what we were taught in the fire service 20 years ago when I was a member.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks MrHyde

Then how can they stop people from operating grills and fire pits on their own private property during a fire ban?  I would think a fire could spread from the TRF grounds just as easily as it could spread from anywhere else...

Rani I believe it has to do with average folk kabooms vs. professional kabooms.  Even though there is a burn ban everywhere, the City of Houston still had a massive fireworks show for July 4.

I am really concerned about camp!  Sure will be a dark campground without fire pits in use...

Well, the "they" I meant is the authority who ban the general public from using fire pits and grills on property those individuals own, such as at their own homes, where they no doubt are also insured against fires and such... I didn't mean people using those things in the TRF campgrounds.  If there is a state-wide ban, how can it affect individuals on their own private property and not businesses?  I'm just trying to understand where the difference comes in.

Not that it's really all that important that I understand it, I suppose... and I'm definitely not trying to divert this thread, so I guess I should just let it go, huh?  ;)

TRF insures the fireworks because they operate the show.  They don't insure the use of bonfires and grills in the camping area.

Although I am the lead shooter for the show, I work for Alan Hutton who has the fireworks contract and choreographs the show. I can't comment on the reasons behind the failure to renew his contract, but I can say that burn bans are typically locally enforced, so that is likely not the problem since TRF is pretty much its own local government. I understand that there will be a new person doing the show this year and disappointed as I am, I wish them the best of luck and safe shows.

I certainly applaud your manner in this.  I would like to know if there is another sky that you set fire to, I'd like to see it.

If you saw the Houston's Freedom Over Texas fireworks show on the fourth, I was on that crew along with the aforementioned Mr. Hutton.  :)
