Thank you!   Colored aprons are very period - you'll see them in a lot of "peasant" painting.  I've seen teal, yellow, green - all sorts of colors.  I have the green one, an orange one, and a yellow one.  The nice thing is that they only require a small amount of fabric and can easily be hand sewn in a couple of hours.  It's a great little project when you are in the waiting room at the doctor's.

Hee! The only problem, of course, is once you decide you need a colored apron, you then must decide WHAT COLOR! LOL  Much, much easier just to stick to white!

isabelladangelo

No, you just get one in every color.  Much easier.  Besides, they are small and easily stored.   ;)

Huzzah! I've finally finished something for this year!  My coral Italian dress at last has the guard on the skirt.

It's a small change, but I think it will have a big impact. Here's what it looked like last year, without it:

I had trouble tracking down more of the 1" black twill tape. When I found three spools this weekend, I snatched them all up--even though I needed less than 1 yard! Like the guards on the bodice, I debated about more interesting arrangements (mixing narrow and wide guards, etc)--but ultimately decided basic was best.

YAY!

I think the new guards add more finish to the whole look. Nice work.

I agree with Dona. I loved this dress from the start and now it looks polished. Now *I* want trim and guards on my yellow bodice and teal skirt!  ::) Jealousy thou art a shallow beast.

Me, too! I want guards on *everything!* I'm not sure I can manage a straight enough line, though. BUT!!  You should totally go out and get yourself a 2" Clover bias tape maker (go for the real Clover ones; the Dritz *looks* the same BUT IS NOT.). A couple of weeks ago I made the guards for my black skirt, and it was AWESOME! So much fun to run the fabric through that little gadget, and have the strips come out perfectly every time.

I got mine at a local quilt shop for about $12, but you may be able to find them cheaper online.

Honestly, it was even easier than tracking down enough spools of 1" twill tape, although the twill tape was a pleasure to work with and curved beautifully, made nice mitered corners, etc. I tried making 1" trim with some leftover linen, and it was too squiggly. It will be fine for binding something someday, but it wouldn't keep a nice, straight, even, flat line like you need for guards.

Today I plan to hem the black skirt so I can slap those babies on!!

Gem - I agree with everyone else, putting the guard on the bottom of the skirt really completes the whole ensemble. Looks wonderful.

Actually, I got a package of 3 different sizes from that estate clearing lol! I can't wait to use them--do you know what I've been using to make my own bias tape? A quilt pin and my ironing board  >:( Oooo I hate it! Show us that black skirt when you're done, that punched fabric is sweet!
P.S. I made a skirt out of that yellow "damask" fabric--it came out looking very 17th century, but I think it'll look "pirate-y" with that blue under-bust bodice.  :D

The Second Captain Teague coat is finished for a 15 September wedding. Pirate theme!!

I used a Scarlet Red Drapery weight Denim, 100% Cotton for the coat. I redrew the leaf design in places and trimmed it up a bit. Now on to the Corset and Cloak for the Bride.
