Anyone know where I can get black tropical weight wool - about 15-18 yards - at a semi-reasonable price?  I'm not anywhere where I can dye it so it must be black.

Denver fabrics was having a sale....http://www.denverfabrics.com/search/search.aspx?keywords=Tropical%20weight%20wool, 20% off apparel fabric, though I am not sure when the sale ends or what you would consider reasonable?

I stopped at Wal-Mart for TP this afternoon & found 12 3/8 yds of 58" black wool crepe at $1.50/yd, for a total of a little over $18.00.  The fabric content was not labeled, the clerk thought it was the bolt end of wool, and it was so nice I brought it home & burn tested it - & looks like wool!  That's what I call reasonable!   ;D

YeHAW! another way to check wool content is a bleach test, take a small 1"x1" square of your fabric & submerge it in 1/2 C of bleach let it sit over night, in the morning give it a swish & if it has all dissolved, it is most likely 100% wool, any left over bits may be synthetic.

The disease has hit me again. Like I need more fabric!!!

I was at JoAnn's to get a few things for a commission I am working on. What do I see for 60% off per yard??  Burgandy Taffeta with Black Velveteen embossed flowers, over 6 yards left , that I am going to use for a petticoat for funky 18th Century ensemble I am going to make for the Social night at Costume Con 27 this May. I have close to 3 yards of this fabric from a  previous purchase. The rest I will use for a Vistorian piece I have in mind to be made at a later date.

The fabric I have for the main outer gown is a Metallic Brocade fabric with a funky floral print in blacks and silvers. Not going for the Historical look on this one. I am going to be a Vampire from the 18th Century attending the Venice Carnivale!!

This is the pattern I have for View A....http://www.jpryan.com/details/anglaise.html  I have the pattern for the 18th Century stays and pocket hoops(pniers). I am going to add the hand gathered Dust Ruffle along the bottom edge of the Petticoat for the Historical look anyway.

I am sure there will be plenty of photos from the Social Night!! Here is the Costume Con 27 site for more info...http://www.costume-con.com/cc27/INDEX.HTM There is still time to register if anyone is interested. CC27 will be held in the Baltimore, Md. area.

Costume Con is a fun, informative convention with some of the top Costumers in the business competing and giving panels. The talent is amazing, the Masqurades somethng to write home about, and the crativity overflowing. I will also be attending Costume Con 28 in Milwaulkee in 2010, where I will have entries in both the Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Historical Masqurades, as well as Dolls.

I know, I am going to be busier than snot for the next 2 years. I will come up for air to go to Faire.

Hi all! Wow, reading all of your posts makes me feel a little better about my stash! LOL!  I worked at JoAnn and Hancock's, so you can imagine what I picked up just during those times. I have no less than 8 bins full of fabric, I don't know how many bags, and several bolts of stuff like homespun that I keep telling myself will go into _something_ eventually. Patterns...at least 1000. I'm not kidding. I keep track of when the pattern pulls are done and hit the dumpsters that night. FREE PATTERNS!! If you don't mind getting a little dusty, you can get tons of patterns for free. Don't buy it when they tell you they send them back to the manufacturer...they throw them out! It's a sin, I tell you! A sin!  I'm determined to clear out my stash and take what I know I won't use to a fabric swap this spring at fight practice. I have so much that all I have in my sewing room is a cleared trail to my sewing table. It's truly out of hand..LOL

Oh mannnn
I moved a couple of weeks ago.
From a little 600sqft 1bd apartment to a 1100sqft 2bd.
I didn't realize how much fabric I had until I had to move it all.
As soon as I started having to move it I thought of you guys
I have enough to fill a large 7 drawer dresser, a 120qrt bin, plus 9 full sides of different colors in suede.
plus all the veg tan leather for tooling.

.

Thankfully the 2nd bedroom is now an office/sewing room with a full size drafting table dedicated to sewing/leather work/jewelery making. and yes the walk in closet in the 2nd bdrm is for all the garb, fabric, patterns, bolts of muslin, Victor (my bodyform) and everything that goes with it.

You were talking about how they just throw out the patterns that is true.  Some companies do make them send them back but other's , No.  When I first got married I worked at one for 2 years.  i had WAY to many patterns from there.  Once I started drafting my own patterns I started donating patterns I didn't' need anymore to local non profit theaters and charities.   I still have a pattern stash but they are for specialized stuff,  and the "ah crap I don't have time to make the pattern myself" situations.

It is kind of strange watching your personal history become costume.

Auryn

oh wow
how do you find out when they throw the patterns out??
I have a feeling that if I asked one of the employees they would not be too keen to tell me.
Unfortunately I am nowhere near being able to draft my own patterns yet.
