Thank Rani
of course there are NO hancock fabrics anywhere near me- the closest is 3 hrs away literally 10 min away from my in-laws' house.

what would you think of a vendor that sells supplies for the DIYers??
For example- funky jewelery beads and findings as well as metal parts for guns, accessories etc
Scissors cuts Paper. Paper covers Rock. Rock crushes Lizard. Lizard? poisons Spock. Spock smashes Scissors. Scissors dec

That's one of the things I considered mentioning, I haven't seen anyone selling much in the way of raw materials.

BTW an acquaintance just posted on Facebook a schedule of Steampunk cons around the country for 2012

Mr. Hyde, don't know what your wife's steampunk style is, but perhaps a cute little leather tophat? Or if the budget is a bitt too tight for that a small bunch of leather roses would make a lovely and very personal gift. She could pin them to her hat or wear as a corsage or wristlet or wear them in her hair. There are many sites online for these and I know there are faire vendors that make these. If you are handy you might even make them yourself. Search youtube for "How to make leathet roses". You can even scent them to make them even more romantic. :)

Auryn, how fun. No real advice, but I know you'll come up with something wonderful. My own thoughts are that a fun, spontaneous and relatively inexpensive item would be the thing.

I really like the leather rose idea.  Any faire vendors you recommend that sell outside of faire?

I've only been to one steampunk con, and I was a tad disappointed by the stuff there as well. Granted, it was the con's first year and there were only about 10 vendors however. Maybe I'm just looking for different stuff than what most people sell, but since I do make a lot of my own stuff, I leaned towards buying hard to find supplies at this con more than pre-made objects. One vendor had big gears, vacuum tubes, and other odds and ends. I thought it was a great idea! Saved me shipping fees and wait time, you know?

Perhaps you could offer supplies, and then display or even sell a finished example of how to use those supplies. Like, if you're selling a fabric pouch with gears and other stuff on it, sell a plain pouch and the loose gears as well, for those who want to make it themselves. That's just a suggestion, obviously you could apply it to the goods you sell. But, I think selling supplies is a great idea!

Mr. Hyde, don't know the name of a specific vendor, just recall seeing them and thinking they were pretty. Try doing a leather rose search on Etsy. Tons there.

It has already likely been mentioned before, but I cared not to read this many pages of topic to see. I just got an email from Medieval Collectibles and their offerings of steampunk accessories is growing.  ;D Some of their stuff can be pricy but they also have some more affordable items as well.
