(peeks head in thread)

Hi all!  Just thought I'd update you on our plight here on the island.

90% of all properties suffered some type of damage.  The island looked like a war zone.  My roof has been patched and so far no water has fell INSIDE since the storm.  Many of the small shanties built by the haitians have been marked with an X.  All buildings marked with an "X" will be leveled and can no longer be repaired and lived in.  The TCI Red Cross and a regiment from Burmuda gave out Tents to all those who had houses condemned.

City water is on.  I've finally been able to get a real shower or two insteady of bucket showers.

I really miss my steaks/burgers.  Meat on the island is still "sketchy".  Would prefer to see fresh meat come in.  Did get some fresh veggies and fresh fish fillets at the fish market.

Some electricity has been restored to part of the island.  We have to have an electrician inspect the house before they will plug us in to the grid.  We're on the list and I'm hoping to have electricity by my birthday.  That would be a great birthday present.

Carnival Cruises will reopen the dock on October 8th for our first ship since the storm.  I just might get to work and make money!!!  Gas is $6.25 a gallon and that gets quite expensive when running a generator.

I'll post pics when I have a reliable signal.

I'm glad things are improving at least somewhat for you Festmum!

We're not getting much news on people missing from Galveston & Bolivar....

Well, it has been a month since Ike visited.  We're still without power although I see the light at the end of the tunnel (it's very faint but it's there!)

Worked for the first time yesterday.  Of course, no one is buying right now due to the economy....great....at least I have $40 in my pocket!

Work again tomorrow.  Hopefully I'll get a boat full of rich europeans!!!  LOL

Still wishing for that steak.  Ma'an....I can almost taste it.

I miss you guys.  Can't wait till we have phones and DSL again.  That's what I'll wish for on my Birthday.

I'll check in again soon.

Heard a blurb on the news that Hurricane Omar is causing cruise ships to divert. How does the forecast look for you Festmum?

Is there a link that you can post so that we can get a tracking for Omar?

Omar didn't bother us here in GT.  He did; however, cause cruise ships to divert TO us!!!  That means we got a little $$  YAY.

Bad weather in the last few days.  It's quite cool and too much rain for all these "Tarp" roofs.

Good news....I HAVE POWER!!!

Bad news....no phone lines...no DSL.   :'(

I live in Friendswood, which is about 30 minutes directly North on 45 from Galveston Island.  In my area, we have now had all the branches picked up from our curbs, but all of our fences that went down are still sitting on our curbs.  I got my insurance check yesterday for the loss of my back fence, the loss of 3 large patches of shingling on my roof, the damage of my garage doors, and the loss of one screen on a back window.  We can now finally start to get these things fixed and move on a bit....  The damage to my house is fairly common in this area, though not as many people had quite as much roof damage as we did.  We had no flooding damage though because we're far enough away from Clear Lake and the ocean.  The area over closer to the lake was completely flooded though because the Lake rose roughly 10 feet in certain area!!
