On the festive attyre site, there is a picture of Syrilla and one of Lady Kathleen and Lord Philip of Olmsted as featured garb in different years. Huzzah to all who have been featured!

Finally picking back up a project that I banished to the back of the closet a few months ago.  The finished product will be a doublet gown in black, purple, and gold [and cream] with a raven [masquerade] mask in time for the end of October.  I need to take up the hem and shorten the straps on the prom-dress-turned-kirtle today, and I'll be starting the skirt tomorrow.

The project started taking on a mind of its own back in May, so I stuffed everything in the closet.  One recent, successful trip to a different fabric store brought it all back together, and I can't wait to see where it goes.

Don't you love it when a piece of material changes your inspiration, and refreshes your drive for a project... except when it comes in the middle of another important project...  ::)

I'm finally working on re-working my cloak. The original I made with my Grandma, and I made a VERY poor fabric choice. The outer was originally this:

Which was very pretty, but super stiff and heavy. Doesn't drape and uncomfy to wear.  I think I'll be repurposing into a bodice if I ever find myself willing to tackle that job.
So, here's where I'm at right now:

I'm using the Simplicity 5794 pattern. I wasn't planning on doing the capelet, but discovered I had WAY more fabric than I needed so I decided to go for it. The lining is a wide corduroy, very soft and extra warm. :D I'll need to do some serious trimming off the bottom.

So, what hood do you think I should add. The one I made before had the pointy ended hood, which isn't the one assigned to the capelet pattern. I like the pointy hood, but think it might be too busy. What do you think?

And sorry for the crappy phone camera photos, I'll get better ones next time I post.

Marietta Graziella

Huzzah, Leyla!
2 thoughts on the pointy hood idea...

1.  The pointy hood would break up the lines of the capelet for a nice change in view.
2.  The pointy hood would break up the lines of the capelet for a jarring change in view.

So you see, it doesn't matter either way, IMHO, which you did ask for.   ;)  I think you sure make the hood you like and then LOVE wearing your fabulous new cloak!
Nothing clever to say here.  Not enough caffine yet.

Okay, I am starting my doublet and here are the fabrics. The purple/blue is doublet fabric and the saffron, I am thinking of making a shirt with it. I am doing the short doublet but adding sleeves. Should I do buttons or lacing?
What do you think my faire rennies?

And here is another look at my sewing room, set up for cutting.

Don Juan prefers buttons simply because the fabric 'lays' better.
I suspect you might feel the same.
(and shank buttons are period if anyone cares)
If your machine has a buttonhole attachment that makes like soooo much easier.

Thanks Donna Catalina, the more I look at the fabric the more I am leaning toward buttons. If I do buttons, loops of buttonholes?

LOL @ Lauren Lee, I don't have furkids. The other half is allergic to cats and a dog in that apartment is not wise.  ::)

Lady Seasan, what did you think of it?  This is my first time working with it.

Very nice and striking combo.  I would use the saffron as lining or in places that it is seen and a white or cream shirt.    Buttons is my vote.

i found it quite easy (especially since i hate using patterns!) .  i made the second option, the longer doublet, but the front pieces are the same i believe. i am about to work on the pants-i lost my instruction sheet-so i have no idea on what i am actually doing at this point, besides cutting out the fabric!

i would also suggest using loops with the button holes

I agree with Syrilla, DragonWing - I would use the saffron as a lining or maybe even the trim on the outside, should you choose to trim your doublet.

I vote for buttons...
